Casi had sent Conner a text earlier saying she was having a terrible day and asked him to meet her for lunch. She was now late, and she was worried he hadn’t waited for her. Her frown deepened as she scanned the dark pub. Finally, he waved at her from the booth he’d claimed in the back.

“You okay?” he asked when she practically collapsed on the bench across from him.

“Yeah. No. I don’t know.” Rubbing her temples, she exhaled harshly. “I’m sorry. I’m going to be terrible company. I shouldn’t have called you.”

“What’s going on?”

“Nothing. Let’s just order.”

He reached across the table, taking her hand. “What is it?”

Lifting her gaze, she looked at him pathetically. “Mark has decided he doesn’t want a divorce.”

Conner’s mouth hung open for several moments. “What?”

“He’s not with that woman anymore, so…” She frowned.

He released her hand, nodded slightly, and picked up his menu. He exhaled loudly as he scanned over the contents. “What are you eating?”

Casi’s brow creased. He’d gone from supportive to pissed in a matter of seconds.

“The chicken is always good,” she said quietly.

“And to drink?”

“Oh. I think I need a martini.”

Conner caught the attention of their waitress, placed their order, and looked around. He exhaled harshly before looking at her, finding her staring at him. “What?”

“I’m just… I guess I’m surprised at how angry you seem.”

“Angry? That you brought me here to tell me you’re going back to your husband? Not at all, Cas.”

She lifted her eyebrows. “What? Why would I do that?”

“You said he doesn’t want a divorce anymore.”

Casi laughed slightly, and Conner looked at her in disbelief.

“That doesn’t mean I don’t. I brought you here to vent because if he contests, he can drag this out for months. God.” She scoffed when his face softened slightly. “You really think I’d go back to him?”

Conner smiled, and he glanced away as if he were embarrassed. “Well, you seemed torn.”

“Not about that.” She picked up a sugar packet and tossed it at him. “Jesus, Conner. I have a little more self-respect than that. I just don’t want the jackass dragging this out. I want it done.”

“Did you tell your attorney that?”

“Yes. He’s spreading the word.” When she looked at him again, she grinned. “You were mad at me.”

He laughed. “I guess.”

“Come on,” she said in a low voice. “Do you really think I’d end things in a dark pub over lunch? I’d at least get another good fuck out of you.”

He laughed again. “I’d hope.”

Casi sat back and watched the waitress put a drink in front of her. Once alone, she lifted the glass and silently toasted him before taking a long drink. “I know him. This is going to get ugly. I didn’t want that.”

“Can your attorney handle ugly?”

She frowned. “I guess we’ll see.”

“I know lawyers who can if you need to change tactics.”

Nodding slightly, she took another drink. “That’s good to know.”

He clasped her hand in his and massaged his thumb into her palm. “You look stressed.”

“I am.” Her gaze softened as he lifted her hand to his mouth and kissed it gently.
