Chapter Eighteen

Bile rises in my throat, but before I can step back again, Bebe grabs my hand.

I flinch and pull, but she’s strong with a vice-like grip. “Lulu told me you were interesting, and she was right. Oh, the power inside you. We could use you on our side.”

She lets go. The prisoner wails mournfully. My head pounds and vision blurs into a cascade of spots. Panic overtakes me, and it takes all my will to keep standing.

“Calm down. Here, sit.” She leads me to the table, and I take a seat. Bebe does a good job ignoring Tony, and I wonder why he’s not doing something. He’s the muscle, after all. Where’s all the testosterone when you need it. I’m waiting to see sword brandishing and hear the hail of bullets ripping through the room’s furnishing and slugs embedding themselves in the walls. Instead, there is only the witch’s musical voice in my ear.

“Let me explain what we’re attempting to do. Once you hear about it, you’ll appreciate our plan and maybe even want to join us. Tea?”

I shake my head.

“Lulu, Hen, and I are much older than we look. We’ve seen the struggles of women from before the times of the Salem witch trials. While the trials were a tragedy, they weren’t the worst of times for women. We want to make a change, a lasting one. It took a long time for us to figure out how, but we finally did. My sisters and I plan to raise Lilith. It’s possible once we get five human souls. Men’s souls.”

“Her name is Hen? Like in chicken?”

Her eyes glint and narrow. “That’s what you took away from this?”

“Lilith? Isn’t she in the Bible?”

“Some people think Lilith’s a demon, but we understand she’s going to be a savior to women everywhere. Men have ruled too long and done so much wrong. It’s time for change. Are you following? You look a little glazed.”

“You need men’s souls to raise a demon.”

“She’s not a demon to women. She will be the start of a new era, one in which women rule. My sisters and I’ll be her immortal emissaries, roaming the world and keeping men in check. If men don’t obey, they will die. Isn’t that often how history treats women.”

Purgatory is looking better and better by the moment, but I feel for Anthony. I don’t think he’d do well under the Lilith regime.

“Doesn’t that make you as bad as the men who subjugated women?”

“Lilith will rule wisely and compassionately.”

“Did you have a bad break-up recently? You sound a little bitter?”

“Not bitter, just ready for the world to change. Men have ruled it and destroyed it. Now it’s time for women to take a crack at improving it.”

“If you say so.” I glance at the bound man. “And to make this happen, you must sacrifice five men?”

“I’d sacrifice hundreds to raise Lilith.”

“Women's power is great, but I’d like to go home now and think this over.”

“Where exactly is home, dear?”

I have no answer but a sinking suspicion Bebe has more information on me than my name.
