Chapter 13

At the airport we hired a car, a process that took about eight minutes, a valid driver’s licence, and a credit card. When we had been waiting for Josef outside Ivana’s house, I proposed to Heike that we forget Schenk’s order to return as quickly as we could and look instead for the missing girl. The total distance by road all the way back to Bremen was around eight hundred kilometres and could be done in around eight hours so we could beat the intended flight back there if we didn’t find reason to stop along the way, which, to be honest, I believed we would.

With me driving and the satnav guiding us, Heike made a call to Klaus Nieswand. His voice came through the speaker on her phone. ‘Detective Nieswand.’

‘Klaus, it’s Heike. Can you be overheard?’

We got a moment of silence from his end. I imagined him checking around and possibly moving to sit somewhere else. ‘No. What do you need?’

I listened as she talked. ‘Klaus, I’m not sure who we can trust within that group. Schenk sent us here for no reason at all; he got all the evidence gathered in Brno sent by data transfer yesterday.’

‘Yes, it’s all here. They had me going through it all night.’ To prove a point he yawned, the sound of him trying to stifle it obvious.

‘We’re not coming back, Klaus. Otto thinks he can find the missing girl from the murder here, so we are pushing on to Prague. If she is alive, she might be able to tell us who the murderer is.’

He didn’t respond for a second and when he did, he was whispering. ‘Look, we are all under orders not to tell you this, but Zachary was spotted here last night.’ Heike and I exchanged glances. ‘Schenk doesn’t want you to know because he thinks Otto is able to contact him and might be helping him avoid the police.’ Of course he did, the utter moron.

‘Is the sighting reliable?’ asked Heike.

‘Only as reliable as they ever are. It was one guy that saw him, down at the docks again, right by where we chased the wolf thing a few hours before. Schenk said he was returning to the scene of the crime.’ This wasn’t good. Zachary had been very clear about his need to leave the city because crowds of people drove him a bit crazy. Add to that the demon magic coursing through his body… I had to accept that he was probably still in Bremen and the murderous creature we were chasing might well be a man I considered an ally.

‘Are the Bureau telling you anything? Are they helping?’ I asked.

‘Not really,’ Klaus snorted. ‘That bunch are as secretive as you can get. Voss just listens all the time, he never says anything. The beat cops are going out in double patrols now and there are extra cops arriving every day. We got four from some village called Wertag last night. I had to look it up on a map; it’s six hours south of here, right down by the Alps.
