I watched Raven pull on his trench coat.

“You know, a trench coat in the middle of June isn’t exactly inconspicuous.”

Raven frowned and looked at his coat. “But I like it.”

I grinned. So the man did have his cute side. Damn, I really had fallen for him that quick. I ran my hand through my hair. “So you’re really going?”

Raven stiffened. “Yes.”

“You do know that is on the top of the list of stupid things to do.”

Raven glared at me.

“Hey, it’s the truth. You have a renowned killer of immortals giving you an invitation to come meet him for a big one-on-one. Sounds like a trap to me.”

“It would have come down to this eventually,” Raven said.

“Yeah, about that. Wouldn’t it be better to get some immortal back up?”

“This is personal.”

I sighed. “I get it. Revenge for killing your House leader. I get it, really, and you certainly got the badass part going for you, but that guy…” I sucked on my bottom lip, trying to figure out how to word it. “There’s something about him.”

Raven narrowed his eyes. “Something about him,” he growled and took a step forward.

I held out my hands. “Not like that. Believe me, you’ve got me twisted around your little finger. If you’re in doubt.” I spread my legs and winked at him. “I’m always willing to show you just how devoted I am.”

Heat flashed in Raven’s eyes and for a moment I thought he might just give up this plan of his, but then he shook his head. “Soon. After this I’ll claim you, completely.”

I shivered, but in anticipation and fear. “And what if there is no after. What if-”

Raven walked over to me and placed a finger over my lips. “I’ll come back. Didn’t I tell you, there is only one way to kill an immortal, and you’ll be here, safe.”

I wasn't buying that. I read the Greek myths. Maybe they couldn't kill each other, but there were lots of ways that immortals could be hurt or trap. After all, they wouldn't even be having the whole one-on-one if that weren't true.

I sighed. “I want to come with you.”

“No,” Raven said, his voice firm.

I looked away, setting my jaw.

Raven took my chin, turning my face to him and met my eyes. “No, Josh.”

I looked down and sighed. “Fine.”

Raven shook his head and brushed his fingers over my cheek. “We really must break that stubborn streak of yours.”

I snorted. “Never going to happen.”

Raven grinned and then his expression darkened. “I’ll be back in the morning. After I capture Alistair, I’ll bring him to the House Council and then come back for you. Until then stay with your friend.”

“Yeah, yeah, I got it.” I was lucky enough that Bryan had been willing to let me crash in his room. I was pretty sure the only reason he agreed was because he was trying to get into my roommate’s pants. “Just come back.”

“I promise,” Raven said.

It had to be enough for now. I nodded and grabbed my duffle bag.
