IT WAS THURSDAY, AND Conner wasn’t back yet. Luke reclined in the chair in the office, rolling his neck against the edge. His nerves vibrated with the need to kick up dust and leave the town behind.

She was going to distance herself from him.

Smart. And he should’ve been the one to say it, to put up the wall.

But he hadn’t.

Her decision, though, caused an empty feeling in his gut, one that twisted and made his throat burn. He couldn’t explain why she had a hold on him, but it was more terrifying than any job he’d ever encountered.

He shot to his feet and paced. She was right about the space that was needed, but damned if he didn’t want to argue. The thought of not having another stolen moment with her only served to make him hungrier. If he didn’t know better, he’d believe she was some kind of temptress, or...a siren.

With an irritated exhale, he stopped short and stared unseeing at the many wanted posters lining the wall. Sketches of criminals looked back, begging to be caught, but all Luke could think about was snatching Sherry Forrester into his arms and never letting go.

An image flashed before his eyes, and he flinched.

A shell of a man, merely skin and bones by the end, floated through his memory. The recollection punched him across the jaw, and he cursed. Again he recalled what he’d blocked ages ago. Sherry had unraveled his hard work with one smile, kiss and passion-filled sigh at a time.

Was she able to do it only because he’d been forced to stick around? Would this have happened with another woman? And why the hell was he taking time to examine his feelings? Who cared? He’d be gone. Conner would return, and Luke would hightail it out of town without looking back.

And it wouldn’t matter that she caused him to recall hated memories or that he hungered for another taste of her. They would soon be separated by miles and miles, effectively keeping him safe from whatever she was doing to him. He rolled his shoulders, trying to release the tension tightening in his muscles. But only one certain kind of activity would do him any good, and she wasn’t game, and he shouldn’t be, either.

A commotion outside grabbed his attention and made him whip toward the window. Cries of “Ranger Calhoun” reached his ears, and he charged through the door. A pair of boys ran toward him, their faces a mixture of fear and excitement. Luke met them on the road.

“A fight, Ranger Calhoun! Near Forrester’s!” The skinnier of the two pointed in the direction of the courthouse.

Luke couldn’t see anything, but he nodded then took off running, his boots pounding the ground. When he came around a duo of buggies stopped outside the hotel, a man went flying off the boardwalk in front of Forrester’s Tailoring. Shouts and cries also alerted Luke as he closed in on whatever was going on. A crowd had gathered; one person helped the fellow who’d been tossed into the street to rise.
