Ryka thanked her and numbly got up, going slowly up the stairs to her room. She closed the door and sat on the edge of her bed for a long time, looking at the papers over and over as if she could somehow decipher a different result. But now that she had a better understanding of what the figures were telling her, she knew there was no mistake. All the titanic effort she had gone to, all the crazy daring, all the struggle with McDonough: it had all gone for naught. A cold knife of fear stabbed her. Jamie. He had put in a lot of hard work, some of it after hours. He would expect to be paid for it. And there was virtually nothing to pay him with. He was already scheduled to come to Emporia on her next day off, so she was at least spared the agony of sending him a telegram with the truth. She wondered if it would be any easier to tell him in person.

Two days later, she met with Buck and Lem at the Longhorn again. Unable to hide her disappointment, she set the papers down on the table before them.

“You look kinda peaked,” Buck drawled.
