“Do you accept the explanation he gave me?” Garfield called after he and Troy had set off after Roscoe.

“He said all the things I’d have expected him to say to excuse himself,” Troy said. “He didn’t say much to me before we were interrupted, but then again I’d have expected him to claim he didn’t know who to trust.”

“Does that mean you still reckon he’s gone rogue?”

“It’s likely, but I’ll need proof before I stop him.”

Troy turned in the saddle to him, his benign expression suggesting he knew what was on Garfield’s mind, and as Troy had been straight with him Garfield reckoned that in return he should be honest with him.

“I’ve heard enough already. If I get a chance to make him pay for what his callous actions did to my friend, I’ll take it.”

“I have a mission to complete, but I won’t stop you.”

Garfield nodded his thanks and with that matter discussed the two men concentrated on trying to work out what kind of trouble they were all riding toward. Since the first burst of gunfire there had been several more ferocious exchanges of fire, but then it had been silent for a while.

With it being likely that the incident had been concluded, Roscoe slowed down allowing the other two men to catch up with him. Then he pointed ahead and to the side.

“We’re almost at the mine, but there’s higher ground that way and we should head there,” he said.

“I got the impression that you hadn’t been here before,” Troy said.

Roscoe’s only response was to smile before he followed his own instruction by swinging away to the side. When Garfield and Troy followed him it wasn’t long before the higher ground came into view ahead.

Roscoe slowed down and when Garfield reached him he realized that this was because a rider was approaching. He was still some distance away and he didn’t appear to have noticed them yet as he was steering a course that would pass around a hundred yards away.

Roscoe leaned forward as he appeared to think about his next action and his dilemma was resolved when the rider came close enough for Garfield to work out that it was Kelly Davison. With a sigh and a hunching of shoulders Roscoe appeared to decide that this wasn’t the right time to approach the man he had been following.

A few moments later that decision became irrelevant when Kelly turned his horse toward them. Even though he was riding away from the scene of a gunfight, Kelly didn’t draw his gun and he only became wary enough to come to a halt when he was fifty yards away.

“You’re the man who cheated me at poker,” he shouted. “Why have you come here?”

“I was heading to Carmon and I heard gunfire,” Roscoe called.

Kelly gave a slow shake of the head and then pointed at the group, an action that appeared to bemuse Roscoe as he only shrugged, but then he flinched and turned around. Garfield did the same and found that while their attention had been on Kelly another rider had sneaked up behind them.
