Chapter Twelve

The leader of the dark knights stepped closer, aiming his crossbow directly at Gavin’s throat. “Where are you and your company going?” he demanded.

“We are on a quest for Mount Thelema,” Gavin answered evenly. “Do not seek to detain us, for we are traveling in the authority and the power of the name of His Majesty, King Emmanuel.”

The dark knight spat on the ground. “In the name and the authority of Argamor I order you to turn around and go back from whence you came.”

“We will continue on our quest for the sacred mountain,” Gavin replied without fear. “You cannot oppose us, for the name of Argamor has no authority over us. We are the children of Emmanuel.”

The dark’s knight’s face contorted with anger. “Then you shall die upon this very spot,” he raged, “for no one defies me and lives to tell about it!” With an angry snarl he raised his crossbow and fired a shot at Gavin’s heart.

The speeding bolt struck Gavin’s Shield of Faith, which harmlessly deflected the missile. Gavin’s book was in his hand, so he swiftly slashed through the air with it, transforming it into a powerful sword. With one quick thrust of the sword he ended the dark knight’s life and then stepped back to join his companions. “Draw your swords,” he said urgently. “The enemy is upon us!”

“There are a score of them,” Malcolm quavered, reverting to his old ways of fear and doubt. “There are only four of us—we don’t have a chance!”

“A score minus one,” Gavin corrected, “and we are armed with His Majesty’s own invincible sword, before which the enemy cannot stand. Draw your swords, all of you!”

“Prepare to die, knave,” one dark knight snarled. “You have slain our leader, and for this you will pay with your blood.” The dark knights surrounded the four travelers, grinning evilly with anticipation.

“What are we going to do?” Aldith cried.

“Draw your sword and prepare to slay some dark knights,” Gavin replied fiercely. “Now—draw your swords!”

Slowly, almost reluctantly, his three companions complied.

“Surrender or die!” a dark knight cried. “Drop your swords, or you will not leave this wood alive!”

“Fight only in the power of Emmanuel’s name,” Gavin urged in a low voice. “If we fight in our own strength, we will be vanquished, for they are more in number than we. His name will bring victory.”

“Gavin…” Katherine began in a plaintive voice, but Gavin interrupted her.

“Get your sword up! We will not wait for them to attack us—we will attack first! Ready…charge! For the glory of Emmanuel!” Swinging his invincible sword with all his might, the brave youth charged straight into the ranks of the enemy, and they fell back before the furious onslaught. Malcolm, Aldith, and Katherine stood rooted to the spot, watching in open-mouthed astonishment as the dark knights retreated before the power of Gavin’s sword.

Finally, Malcolm could take it no longer. “For the glory of Emmanuel!” he cried, leaping into the fray and swinging his sword fiercely. At the first
