Chapter Ten
Two undercover MI-5 officers were dispatched to the Broadcasting House, the home of the BBC on Langham Place, and brought back Leonard Roth. He was tall and slim and somewhere in his forties. He was a handsome man, in a slick, unctuous way, with too much sandalwood cologne and hair crème.
âAll right, same as before,â Durgin warned Maggie, eyes narrowing. âMr. Standish and I will do the questioningâand you may watch through the mirrored glass.â
âAnd, as before,â Maggie countered, âIâd prefer to be in the room and contribute to the interrogation.â
âSorry, Miss Tiger,â Durgin told her, not unkindly. âAnd Iâm sorry you had to see the sorts of things you found in his apartment.â
Oh, for heavenâs sake. âSo, let me get this straightâyouâre not worried about my seeing the corpses of murdered women, but you are worried about my seeing writings and photographs about sex? Sex trumps death? Iâd say thatâs rather puritanical, Detective. And here I thought we Yanks had cornered the market on that.â
âIf Rothâs our Blackout Beast, there will be stories disclosed you might not have the stomach for, Miss Tiger.â
âIf you hadnât noticed, Detective, I donât scare easily.â
âAnd, as Iâve said before, there are facts he might not disclose in the presence of a young woman.â
There were bigger battles to fight. âFine.â
â
In the interrogation room, Leonard Roth sat at a wooden table, drumming his fingers.
âIâd like to lodge a complaint against the agents who came for me at the BBC,â he began in plummy tones. âNot only did they manhandle me, but they caused me undue embarrassment. How Iâm going to explain this to my producerââ
âLooks like you enjoy a bit of manhandling,â Durgin interrupted. He took the seat across from Roth. âOr is it that you like to do the manhandling yourself?â
âWhat the devil?â Roth exclaimed.
Mark took the charcoal sketches of the girls in various stages of undress from his briefcase. He set them on the table, fanning the papers out like a deck of cards. âHow well did you know these women?â
Roth looked down at the drawings, then gave a short, strangled laugh. âThis is a simple misunderstandingâI donât know them at all.â
âYou seem to know them quiteâ¦intimately,â Durgin insisted.
Roth crossed his legs and leaned back in his chair. âWell, itâs not my fault the girls donât close their blinds, now, is it?â
Mark leaned in. âItâs not as if theyâre expecting someone across the way to have a bloody telescope!â
âIf you ask me, if they left their curtains open, they wanted to be seen.â Roth shrugged. âProbably enjoyed it.â
âWhere did you take them?â Durgin pressed. âWhen you met with these girlsâwhere did you go?â
âI never met these girlsâI never even spoke to them!â He tugged at his tie. âI know it might not look like it with everything youâve seen in my roomâbut everything I do is, er, solo.â
âWhere were you on the nights of March twentieth, twenty-seventh, and twenty-ninth?â
There was a pause as Roth searched his memory. âI was at the studio,â he managed.
