Rule #25: Demonstrate the capacity to exquisitely care for your current blessings so that the universe will prepare more for you.
Sheryl paused for what seemed like a minute of silence. Tears welled in her eyes. She blurted out, “You’re the one who works and travels like a dog all week; you have a maid, and you told me once that you sometimes still scrub toilets and run the vacuum on the weekends at your house! It’s a place to live, not a museum! Sounds like you have a problem too. You should be exhausted just like me. I was just asking for a little empathy, James.” I responded, “When I take extra care of my blessings, that is my way of thanking the universe. “The more grateful I am, the more my blessings will be multiplied. By polishing my blessings, above and beyond the work of my housekeeper, I am thanking the universe and demonstrating that I have the capacity for even more blessings. Gratitude is in my heart. Nothing is taken for granted. As a good shepherd of my blessings, the universe is guaranteed to bless me with more.”
The way you are in one area is usually the way you are in all areas. If you’ve been blocking yourself from receiving money, chances are you’ve been blocking yourself from receiving anything else that’s good in life… The mind has a habit of overgeneralizing and says, “The way it is, is the way it is, everywhere and always.”

My passionate exchange with Sheryl poignantly reminded me that like the downward spirals of many people, her business’s stagnation, along with her plateaued net worth, was attributed to: 1) her bad attitude, 2) her failure to demonstrate the capacity to handle more blessings, and 3) her complete and utter lack of gratitude.
Today, I am proud to report that the tough conversation that Sheryl and I had was a turning point for her. She has grown her company and has acquired another one. The fire is back in her belly, and she is having fun with life. She is not pouting. She is taking care of her blessings. To top it all off, when Sheryl fixed her attitude, she attracted a good man into her life and recently got married. Score!
A great attitude becomes a great day, which becomes a great month, which becomes a great year, which becomes a great life.
—Mandy Hale
As I have discussed all throughout this book, we already know that we must always do the work. As we do the work, we must remember that the universe is not finite. There are far more than enough blessings to go around for all of us, with much left over. Remember: the word blessing is just another word for responsibility. A key to receiving more is understanding the simple rule that increased blessings are tantamount to increased responsibility. The more things you are blessed with, whether they are material or non-material, the more effort is required for you to care for and nourish those blessings to make them sustainable.
