"Not that I was overly fond of him," said Leavitt, wrapping the fuzzy towel tighter around his perspiring body. "Still, I don't see why Offord had to get it."

"You're never going to be anything but an idiot," Dickensheet told him from his bench against the wall of the steam room, "a sentimental idiot. Offord was going to talk."

His head was bandaged.

"Was he? You and I were already in the car. All we have is the word of that -- "

"I believe him." Dickensheet rubbed at his beard, which was dotted with beads of perspiration. "There's no need to go on debating.".

"If they could do it to him, they could do it to us."

"A very apt remark," said the tall, gaunt man who entered the steam room. He had a white terry cloth robe draped over his narrow shoulders. "I advise you both to hold on to that thought."

Automatically both Leavitt and Dickensheet sat up straighter.

Lazlo Grimm strode across the misty room. "I must say this is the most uncomfortable meeting place we have yet used. A Turkish bath, of all places." He lowered himself to a bench.

"You told us," began Dickensheet, "not to use any of the usual places until -- "

"Yes, I am aware of my instructions," said the gaunt actor. "That does not mean, however, that I must enjoy this somewhat clammy experience. Have you done as I instructed you?"

"Yes, we arranged everything as you suggested," answered Leavitt. "Though I really don't think old Tanksley knows enough to -- "

"He may know the location of one of our other meeting places," said Grimm. "Therefore, the wisest thing to do is avoid those places for now. Yes, avoid them and make a few preparations in case the Avenger should stop by." He gave them a bitter smile. "Actually, the old man should have been killed along with Offord."

"There wasn't time," explained Dickensheet.

Grimm closed his deep-set eyes, and steam swirled around his skull. "Had things been managed a bit better, it might have been possible to kill the Avenger and his underlings right there at Hickyville."

Leavitt protested, "You don't know those guys, they're tricky."

"I am not, I assure you, in awe of Justice, Inc."

"You know," said Levitt, "if you hadn't had the bright idea of swiping that girl's uncle for one of the experimental cadavers, we wouldn't even have the Avenger to worry about."

"Take it easy," warned Dickensheet.

"No, no," said Grimm, "he's quite right. I was amusing myself when I included Denny Woodbairn in the group that was collected at the cemetery. I admit it." His eyes opened to watch both the other men. "I had appeared in two films which Woodbairn wrote. I felt it would be an amusing jest to use his body in our work."

"That's some terrific joke," commented Leavitt.

"It happened, and we are now dealing with the consequences. Perhaps my long-established cover identity as an actor did for a moment interfere with my efficiency as an agent for the homeland. We will not belabor the point," said Grimm.
