Another half-hour went by before Bora indicated they had to move. Nathan’s mind cleared and sharpened. He was ready.

Bora led the rest of the way around the mountain until they reached the beaten, paved road. He pointed out a large rock and Nathan crouched behind it. Bora chose to sit on top. “You don’t blend,” he said.

They waited.

After only twelve minutes, a narrow truck rolled up the road. Snapping his fingers, Bora pushed off the rock. The truck slowed and flashed its lights. Waving the truck down, Bora stepped into the road, and when the truck came to a stop, a short woman slid out of the front.

“Nathan, this is Soo Ah. She’ll be your driver.”

She put out her hand, so Nathan shook it. She then headed to the back of the truck. Nathan looked to Bora. “You say that like you’re not coming.”

“You’re not going to some outpost with a bunch of new conscripts. This is a major facility with a big prize at the center of it. They may not know exactly what that boy is, but they know he’s special. The soldiers there will take one look at me and peg me for South Korean.”

But with the caliber of soldier I expect you’ll find at this facility, I would be a detriment.”

“I had been led to believe that you were going to take me to the boy.”

“That’s what I’m doing.”

“I mean, what exactly is Soo Ah going to do?”

“She’s getting you in the building. From that point on, you’ve got to figure it out yourself.”

If Nathan had Robin in his ear, she would already have pulled up detailed floor plans of the facility including all the major entrances and exits, analyzed their security systems and surveillance, and have charted out several paths of approach for him to choose from. “Okay, then, I guess I’m on my own.”

Soo Ah stepped out from behind the truck. “All ready,” she said in unsteady English.

“I guess I’m hiding out in the back.”

“Not exactly.” Bora headed behind the truck and Nathan followed.

A false opening had been built near the lip of the gate. Large oil drums and plastic containers filled the rest of the truck.

Pointing to the opening, Nathan said, “You want me to hide under another floor?”

“No choice. The truck will be thoroughly searched top to bottom. The only reason they won’t suspect a false floor is because Soo Ah has been working there for two years with a flawless record. As much as they’ll
