Chapter 2

Robbie met us at the entrance to Erin’s Café. He broke into a cheery smile when he saw us rushing towards him.

He said, “By heck! You two got here quickly. Did you fly here?” He gave Erin a quick kiss on her cheek. “You’re looking radiant as ever, my love. Have you been taking it easy this morning?”

Erin attempted to push him to one side. “Stop fussing and move out of the way. Let me inside.”

Robbie held his ground and didn’t budge. His eyes twinkled as he looked at me. “Karis, have you got something to say to me? I can tell what you’re thinking. Go ahead, there’s no need to be polite.”

I blurted out, “What on earth are you wearing?”

Robbie grinned and turned around so we could get the full effect of his outfit. He proudly proclaimed, “These are my working overalls. Every man should have a sturdy pair of denim overalls.” His hands rested on the belt which was fastened around his rotund stomach. “This is my tool belt. As you can see, I have a variety of tools.” He tapped his left ear. “I have the obligatory pencil behind my ear ready to use at a moment’s notice. I haven’t used it yet, but it’s there for when the occasion should arise.” He beamed at us.

Erin sniggered and said to me, “He looks like one of the Waltons, doesn’t he?”

Robbie shook his head but continued to smile. “It’s a good job I love you so much, Erin. I know how much you fancy me in this outfit. Don’t forget my offer still stands.”

“What offer?” I asked. “Or is that a private matter?”

Erin’s lips pursed in disgust. “He wants to buy me a matching pair of overalls. He thinks I would look cute in them.”

“You look cute in anything,” Robbie said with a loving smile. “Are you coming in or what? I haven’t got all day to chat. I’ve got work to do.” He held his hand out and Erin placed her hand in his.

For once, my sister was lost for words as Robbie led her into the building. I was just as dumbstruck.

We stood in the centre of the room which had been the main part of Erin’s Café. This was where the tables and chairs had been. A counter had been at the back of the room with the kitchen behind that. Those things had gone now. All that was left was a huge room.

Erin found her voice and said, “The walls have been plastered. They’re all smooth and bump-free. I’ve never seen them like that before.” She continued to take everything in. “Oh! New electric sockets! They’re shiny. And there’s so many of them. The ceiling! It’s white. Where did those water stains go?”

I put my hands on Erin’s shoulders and gently turned her to the left. I said to her, “Look at the extended area.”

She did so. She gasped. “Karis! Look at all the room we’ve got. Did you know that building next door was so big when you bought it? It’s much bigger than my café.
