Chapter Twenty-Six
âWhat do you know of me?â Mona directed her question to John.
They were all huddled in the small cozy living room around the late Simon Vivantâs advisor. His long silver hair swept his shoulders, streaks of black framing his face.
âI moved onto the property when you were just a little girl. Simon adopted you at birth, took you in as his own. He never discussed the circumstances of how he came about finding you. Never a word about it, so I never asked. We Protectors do not question our elders. Not one as powerful as he,â John said, with both forearms resting on the arms of the La-Z-Boy chair he was seated in, a cup of coffee in his hand. âI was cross country on a mission when I felt him pass. Simon and I shared a blood bond, so when he died I felt nothing but pure anguish in my heart. I didnât know what it was, until I received a letter written by Simon from his undertaker. It was dated about a month ago. I immediately came back home to confirm.â
Mona scooted to edge of her chair. âWait, you mean that Simon had addressed a letter to you dated a month ago?â
John nodded. âAs if he knew his days were numbered. As one of the last Protectors my first priority would be to secure the jade, but Simon left everything, including the jade, to you. Only werewolvesâ kin to a Protector by birth can inherit it. No one else can wield its powers. In the letter, he revealed that you had in fact come from that bloodline. I could only conclude that your real father, no doubt a Protector, left you in Simonâs care.â
âI donât get it,â Xander spoke from beside her. âWhy would Monaâs real father give her up? Did he not know the prophecy, as all Protectors should? Did he not know that a child born of a witch and a Protector would fulfill it?â
John stroked his small silver goatee. âMonaâs real father could have been acting in her best interest. In order to keep her safe until her maturity, she needed the protection of a warrior. As Iâm sure you are aware of our history, Simon was a warrior. Simon left no clues as to who Monaâs real father is. His identity may be lost forever. Monaâs mother is no longer living.â
Mona dropped her head as her heart saddened for the mother she had never known. âHow did she die?â
âDeath records suggest that she was poisoned. She was in her prime, as witches call it, when she gave birth to Mona. She never made it to her twenty-fifth birthday.â
âPops told me that I should not try to contact her or other relatives, that it was not good to delve in the past. He said that part of my family would never understand.â
âDonât question his reasons just yet. That part of your family is human. It was said that your mother was not one to flaunt her gift of witchcraft.
