Chapter 9

When Rockman and I returned to the base we heard a rumor that someone high up was in hot water for the last mission we were on and that a certain D.O.D. front man was gunning for him hard. We both asked around but could not find out anything, other than that the day seemed pretty normal.

Rockman and I had lunch together and discussed what we thought was going on. It was rare we got wind of anything big going on unless it was on the news, but this seemed to have shaken the line of brass all the way down into our lowly ranks. At the end of the day, I heard more rumors here and there, but nothing concrete or that sounded like real information.

When I got home, Tamara was waiting for me at the door, I told her about the rumor floating through the base, and she simply said, “He should have been better at his job.”

I looked at her as she stripped and stepped into the shower, “What do you mean by that” I asked.

She said, “All the people he got fucked up? Well, now it’s his turn to get fucked.” She refused to say any more about the subject.

Rockman came in about the time I sat down to eat dinner with the girls. He told us he heard the guy was in huge trouble and would be facing a review board and would probably lose his commission. Nessa said, “well that’s just sad isn’t it?”

Rockman’s mouth tightened a bit as he thought about what she said and replied. “I guess not huh?”

Nessa shook her head and said, “not really”. Rockman walked away to take his shower. Nothing else was said about it. I did wonder though how much if anything the girls knew, but I did not force them to answer any questions I had about it.

I looked through local job postings in the area. I was pretty sure the girls would have followed me to my hometown if I asked them to, but I had no intention of returning to the small town I grew up in, not to mention the fact I had accepted the fact my parents were never going to approve of me being with the girls and I would not subject the girls to their mentality or limit their careers by moving them to a place that had such limited opportunities.

I found a listing for a construction company. I could do that; I was decent with tools and I was strong enough to do the job and I could work outside. I was still months away from my re-enlistment date, but I didn’t think it would be a bad idea to at least talk to the foreman and find out if he would even be interested in hiring me. I went by the construction office on the way to the base the next morning, the lady at the front desk asked me if I had done an application when I inquired about the job opening, they had posted.
