Chapter 26

It was around nine in the evening. The twins were down for the night. Selena and Valentina were going out.

“Friday night in the big city. It’s girls’ night out,” Selena said.

“The two of you look great. Where are you going?” Nick asked.

“We go to my favorite bar,” Valentina said. “Little Odessa. It will give my sister chance to practice Russian.”

“Lots of Russians there?”

“Is favorite place for Russians in city to meet. Good vodka, food is also not bad.”

“Probably crawling with spooks,” Nick said.

“Spooks?”

“You know, spies. Undercover CIA, FBI, those kinds of spooks.”

“I think it would be foolish to be spook in Little Odessa.”

“Don’t wait up for us, Nick,” Selena said.

“I probably shouldn’t say this, but I will anyway. Be careful. The two of you look hot. Like a million dollars, and someone might want to steal some of it.”

Valentina smiled, a million dollar smile.

“This is very sweet, Nick.”

“I think we can take care of ourselves,” Selena said.

“Of that, I have no doubt. Have a good time.”

Selena kissed him and they went out the door.

“He worries too much,” Valentina said in the elevator.

“It’s his nature, he can’t help it. I called a car service. They’ll be waiting downstairs.”

Traffic wasn’t bad. Twenty minutes later they arrived at Little Odessa.

The place was crowded, noisy. Pulsing techno music played in the background. A long, polished bar of black granite dominated the back of the room. Chrome barstools with black leather seats marched in a neat row along the front of the bar. Four bartenders worked to keep up with the steady demand for drinks. The back bar was stacked from floor to ceiling with bottles of vodka. Selena had never seen so many different brands from different countries.

“We will drink Russian vodka,” Valentina said. “It is best.”

Heads turned to look at the two women as they pushed through the crowd. They reached the bar just as two men got up to leave.

“Perfect. We sit, no?” Valentina said.

One of the bartenders came up to them. He was in his thirties, dressed in a black leather vest, white shirt and black pants, muscular. He smiled at Valentina and turned to Selena.

“What can I get you?”

“I want a dirty martini,” Selena said. “Vodka.”

“I will have same. Make them with Moscovskaya. Green label.”

“Coming right up.” He moved down the bar.

“That is Sergei,” Valentina said. “He is handsome, no? He likes me. Sometimes he gives me free drink.”

Selena looked around. It had been a long time since she’d been in a place like this. You could dress it up with elegant furnishings and expensive drinks, but it was still what bars like this had always been, a place to pick someone up for a night of uncommitted sex.

“How often do you come here?”

Valentina shrugged. “Only sometimes. Is good place for me. Not so much for you, I think. You have Nick and children.”

“I hope you’re careful about who you meet here. I mean…”

“I know what you mean, sister. Don’t worry, I am very careful.”

The drinks came. Selena sipped her martini.
