“PRAISE BE to the God of Abraham,” Samuel cried out elsewhere under the same stars. “You have sent the one. He has shown himself by his actions on the field at Elah to be anointed by your hand.”

Word of the celebration in Gibeah and the reason for it quickly reached Samuel in Ramah. He had taken his celebration, as was his custom, to a special Naioth. The tent city shimmered in the desert night. News of David’s deeds and appointment made clear to the old priest the will of the Lord and the vision revealed to him at Bethlehem. As the spirit took him, he chanted by firelight. New images came to him, and the future unfolded before him.

Tears coursed down his cheeks as he saw what he knew must be, even as it broke his heart.

“Your will be done,” Samuel said as he collapsed in the dust.
