CHAPTER 21

ADDY

The plane was relatively empty, courtesy of Tol shutting the doors to the jet bridge behind them. She felt bad for all those people who had missed their flight, in addition to the ones on the plane who didn’t yet realize they were now bound for a different city. She felt even worse for leaving Fred behind. But as the plane lifted off the runway, the only emotion she really felt was an overwhelming sense of relief.

The Forsaken hadn’t been able to stop them. They were now one step closer to Livy.

As she watched the city fall away below them, Addy felt like she could breathe again. But as soon as she started to relax, her conversation with Fred made her sit back up. He said he knew something. Aunt Meredith had come to New York, and she had told him…what? What did she know about all of this madness?

And how had Fred managed to find her in Dulles Airport? Addy was desperate to know, and now, she wouldn’t.

She had no idea how those murderers had tracked them to the airport, but she wouldn’t risk trying to call Fred or Aunt Meredith once she landed. She didn’t want those barbarians to think either of them had anything to do with her.

The golden glow that seemed to conveniently appear around her whenever she needed extra strength had worn off, and that empty feeling she was growing accustomed to had returned. Her dark thoughts spiraled as exhaustion warred with her anxiety and sense of loss.

It was an hour into the flight before the maelstrom of thoughts in her head quieted enough for her to take in her surroundings. It certainly wasn’t as nice as Tol’s plane, but it was still awesome. To sit in a cushy chair and fly through the air was a novelty Addy didn’t think she’d ever get used to.

She looked at Tol, who was passed out next to her. His golden glow had dimmed, and now he just looked drawn. She was fighting exhaustion herself, but she’d only had to yank that woman off Tol. He’d had to Influence about a dozen people to get them off the ground without a host of Forsaken on the plane with them.

She marveled at how easily these words—Source, Forsaken, Influence—had become a part of her vocabulary…a part of her life. A week ago, her conversations had been about corn, Cornell, and purple eyeliner.

Tol was slumped against the window. His prosthetic arm lay across the armrest between them. His shirt sleeve had come up enough to expose the wrist joint. Curious, she reached out to feel it. The material was cool to the touch. It didn’t seem like metal or plastic, but something both hard and light.

“It’s carbon-fiber.”

Addy snatched her hand away from Tol’s prosthesis, only to realize he’d been watching her.

“I’m sorry,” she began, but he waved away her apology.

“It doesn’t freak you out?”

She shook her head. Feeling a little shy, but too curious to stop, she brushed her fingers over the smooth surface of the prosthesis.
