“I knew it,” said the grass frog. “I’ve got to go spread the word.” He leaped off.

Pretty soon there were not just grass frogs but tree frogs and wood frogs and green frogs and even bullfrogs gathered in the weeds and on the lily pads and on the mud all around us in every direction. We slept, surrounded by their bulging eyes and enveloped in their nocturnal croaking.

In the morning Pin woke me with a splash. We ate our fill of water fleas and took off leaping across a meadow.

A brook burbled in the woods beyond. Pin went right for the brook and hopped along its edge till he reached a bridge. He leaped to the center of the bridge and sat there.

I leaped beside him. “Here?” I said, feeling totally confused. There was no pond in sight.

“No,” said Pin.

“Good,” I said. I waited for Pin to move on. But Pin didn’t move. “What’s the matter?”

“Many fih here,” said Pin.
