Soft rays of dawn spilled through the stateroom window. The boat rocked gently, but she could tell they were docked—where, she wasn’t sure. She looked around the cabin—something she’d been too preoccupied to do when Joseph had carried her here last night. Rich platinum and burgundy evoked images of elegance and style. Diaphanous netting canopied the four-poster bed and draped in soft folds around all four sides. The dressing alcove next to the square porthole held a cozy grouping of furniture—and was bigger than her entire bedroom at home.

Beside her, heat radiated from Joseph’s body. She closed her eyes, nerves crowding in her throat. Heavens, what a night.

She had to seriously consider her conduct. Why in the world didn’t she have the willpower to stay out of his bed? Was there some “floozy” flaw in her character she didn’t know about? It certainly had never surfaced before.

Or had it?

That thought brought reality crashing down around her—reality she’d been able to ignore while she’d been cosseted in Joseph’s arms.

But making love with him didn’t change things; only stirred a vortex of rushing uncertainty.

She was pregnant with no memory of having done the deed. Trying to force the recall only made her heart pound and her insides twist. She had to question her sanity, her morals—the very fabric of her life. How had she acted that day? Had her behavior been so bad, so wanton, so lacking in principles, that her mind had deliberately blocked the experience, holding it hostage lest she succumb to the insanity?

Nausea churned in her stomach. Heat flushed her body—the heat of shame, the shame of the unknown. Sister Mary Kathryn at Saint Bernadette’s would have a fit.

A groan slipped past her throat. Forget the nuns. Her mother would have a fit.

The bed shifted, the sheets sliding across her naked breasts. She looked at Joseph and found that he was awake. Suddenly timid after what they’d shared in this bed last night, she glanced away.

“You are building walls, I think.”

“I didn’t come here for this.”

“And neither did I intend it. But you must know it was inevitable.”

Yes. She did know that. Still, it didn’t give her wayward morals the boost they obviously needed.

“What are you worrying over, querida?”

“The dark flaws in my character, I guess.”

“You must not speak of flaws. You are perfect just as you are.”

She pulled the sheet higher, feeling exposed. “Perfect little Catholic girls do not wake up and find themselves inexplicably pregnant.”

“Pregnancy is quite explainable.”

“Yes, but who caused it?” Oh, that sounded terrible. Especially since the man who lay beside her, stark naked, was not the sperm donor in question.

“Is it so important?”

“Very.” If a wannabe hussy lurked in her personality, she wanted to know about it—or her.

“Then we will re-create the day. Search until we find the answers. Together.”

“Why? It’s not your problem.” And what if the answers they found were too horrible to face? Good Lord, she couldn’t guarantee what this baby would look like. For all she knew, the father might be a Martian!

“I do not view it as a problem.
