CHAPTER THIRTY
LAUGHTER ON THE LIFFEY
The Temple Bar, Dublin, Ireland
The cobblestones of the Temple Bar neighborhood in Dublin glinted in the late afternoon sun, the uneven surfaces slick from a recent drizzle. Music spilled from every doorway of the many pubs lining the street. It was a festive harmony of traditional Irish tunes mingling with the chatter of tourists and locals gathered in the area. The scent of Guinness and hearty pub fare wafted through the air, tempting passersby with promises of warmth and sustenance.
The Temple Bar pub itself stood proudly at the corner. Its exterior was a vibrant red that glowed from the many twinkling lights cascading over its sides. Black-trimmed windows peered out onto the street, offering glimpses of the lively scene within. The golden letters of the pubâs name gleamed above the entrance, attracting all the thirsty travelers strolling by.
Laughter erupted from a group stumbling out the door, their cheeks flushed with merriment and perhaps a pint too many. A street musicianâs fiddle sang a jolly tune, adding to the atmosphere. His instrumentâs case was open at his feet, collecting coins from those who enjoyed his music.
The narrow street buzzed with energy, a palpable excitement that seemed to hum in the very bricks of the buildings. Colorful flags and banners fluttered overhead, adding splashes of brightness to the weathered stone facades. The area was crowded and there was an overwhelming mix of sights, smells and sounds.
Genâs nose twitched at the mixture of aromas that wafted through the air. She caught the scent of yeasty beer, the sharp hint of whiskey and underneath it all was the earthy smell of the River Liffey not far away. The calls of seagulls pierced the urban symphony, a reminder of Dublinâs coastal heritage.
To the side, Gen caught the sight of Jack Lane, looking just as much in wonder as she felt. However, he wasnât studying the busy street with all its grandeur. His blue eyes were focused intently on her.
âItâs good to see you,â he said, barely audible over the loud noise all around them. He stretched out his arm and put it around her, pulling her in close to his side. âFinally, we get to be alone and spend time together.â
Gen enjoyed being pressed into him and pulled away from those passing by too close on the lane. It felt like Jack was protecting her from all the people invading her space. She still wasnât used to so many people in a place, making the sights around her overwhelming.
Looking up at Jack, Gen grinned. âYou realize that weâre not really alone. Thereâs like a few thousand people all around us. And then in Dublin, thereâs got to be a million or more.â
He lifted his other hand and pressed a single finger onto the tip of her nose slightly, a sweet endearing gesture. âI just meant that thereâs no Sully or anyone else to distract us from each other. And I get that weâre on a mission, but at least we get to do it together.
