MALIK

Rosie let out a loud groan after unsuccessfully trying to mold her magic into a curse form.

To keep safe, we went to the refugee hideout and sectioned off a small part for ourselves. It was by far the best place for us to be while we prepared, even though the noise of the people seeped through the walls. This was our long-awaited training time, both of us sitting on the cold concrete ground as Rosie tried her best to curse me.

I knew little about wielding magic, but I have been around long enough to understand what was happening in her body right now.

Untamed magic ran wild and only cooperated when she was in some type of grave danger, hence the games she was subjected to in the town. Fortunately, I was not like those monsters and would never make her do something like that again…but I would need to push her.

I acted as though we had all the time in the world, but on the inside I was antsy. I was worried they would get suspicious, or even bored and come looking for their beloved hybrid.

Was it wrong for me to hope that there was some poor sod already pregnant with their next batch? Maybe this time they would succeed in separating them from their family.

“I wanted to talk to you about something,” I said, breaking Rosie’s concentration.

She looked up at me with a raised brow.

“Am I in trouble?” she asked innocently.

I bit back my suggestive retort for something more along the lines of what I wanted to say.

“You know if your mother had returned you…” I trailed, letting her soak up my words.

She dropped her hands and her shoulders slumped forward as if a weight was just put on her back and was far too heavy for her to bear.

“I know,” she said softly. “I probably would have ended up dead like the others, am I right?”

I nodded solemnly.

“You are the strongest I have seen so far,” I said. “But that doesn’t mean that it would have ended differently. Same with Eli.”

She peered up at me between her lashes.

“Why did he abandon Eli?” she asked.

I leaned back and looked up at the metal beams above us. This was a hard conversation to navigate, but one I should have had a long time ago…with both of them.

“I don’t know what the main reason was,” I said. “Maybe a combination of things. They were always so methodical in the things they did. There was a reason for everything. When you were born, who you were born to, your task after you were taken and even—”

“Our death if necessary,” she finished for me. I gave her a sad smile.

“I have to think it was that you did not show up. The children are raised together so it would have been a hassle to do another batch so soon,” I said. “It takes some effort from them too. Not to mention Sarah refused to let Ezekiel have other partners.”

“She birthed all of them?” Rosie asked, her jaw hanging open.
