Take Small Rewards
Smaller, more attainable goals will also give you quicker, more frequent mini-rewards. Those early successes, and the sense of gratification they bring, will spur you on to the next task, and the next. Sports psychologists use the same technique to help Olympic athletes reach their peak performance.
If you're running a marathon, track coaches will tell you the last thing you want to do is dwell on how far the race is—26.2 miles—or you'll taste defeat before the gun even goes off. The way to win is to break the race down into a series of manageable distances.
“You are always capable of doing more,” says Dr. Bill Morgan, a professor of kinesiology at the University of Wisconsin. Professional athletes with challenging goals have learned to utilize the power of small in their training and in competition.
That's how Paula Radcliffe, three-time winner of the New York and London marathons, as well as the winner of the marathon at the 2005 World Championship, reaches the finish line—and the winners' circle. She never lets herself think, “one more mile to go,” or “another forty minutes.” Instead she counts every footfall. “When I count to a hundred three times, it's a mile,” she says. “It helps me focus on the moment and not think about how many miles I have to go.” By enjoying each small, achievable goal — just one step at a time — she can distract her mind and keep her body moving.
Linda uses the same theory with her despised Stair-master:
