Chapter Eighteen

The Way Home

∞

My last night with Eléna and Andrea went pleasantly well. Tired from the long trip and the many hours under the sun, the three of us decided to go to a place close to home and get something refreshing to drink on our walk back. Although I always had mixed feelings towards Andrea, that day and that night he was surprisingly laid back, humble. It wasn’t all about him, his achievements, his double meaning questions, where I had to think twice in case he thought I was pretty much nothing compared to him.

He was open to a new perspective; his questions about my things, my life, were asked with genuine interest. For a while, I thought it was because he wanted to get back into Eléna’s good graces, but she had already taken down her walls of resistance—as I knew she would—so I decided to do the same and give him a chance.

The following day was met with tears and sadness. Eléna had started to cry since the moment we left the house to go to the airport. Eventually, after I had taken my bag out of the car, she asked me to get a quick coffee at the bar, on the ground floor. I knew she was dragging it out, and so was I when I said yes.

‘It’s your fault!’ she started. ‘You don’t come home for only three days. Who does that? It’s unfair!’

‘It’s actually four with today,’ I said, joking.

‘You know what I mean! We had time to do nothing!’ she continued.

‘I know, I know. But think that I wasn’t supposed to be here anyway. Whatever time we got to spend together, it was a gift!’

‘Speaking of which. Why did you come home then? You never told me!’

‘I know it sounds odd, but I thought…with Grandma’s condition…I had this weird feeling.’

‘As if she could be gone anytime?’ And I nodded yes without saying anything else. I had to keep it as vague as I could. ‘When are you coming back?’

‘When are you coming to visit?’ I said, right back at her.

‘You know what the situation is like! With Andrea and everything,’ she replied turning her face from me.

‘He doesn’t own you, you know that, right? You do have your own mind and will.’ I had finally said it, at the end of that trip, hoping that she wouldn’t have the time to reply something silly or that we wouldn’t get into a fight over my cheeky comment.

‘I know, I know.’ She had chosen the easy way out. Admitting it and moving on. In that specific topic, she had outsmarted me. ‘Well this visit was too short. I’m expecting to see my brother again, soon!’

My brother…these words meant the world to me. She wasn’t family by blood but indeed she was family to me. She was my second chance after the first horrible disaster. Now she’s what? The third?, I thought. If my family wasn’t the one I knew, if I came from somewhere else,
