The French battleship Masséna, commissioned in 1898 and the flagship of Admiral Caillard at the 1905 joint fleet review. Her class were ordered in response to the British Royal Sovereigns. Masséna significantly exceeded her design weight and suffered from serious stability problems which prevented accurate firing of her guns. Unsurprisingly, she was considered to be an unsuccessful design and was scuttled as a breakwater in 1915. (US Naval History and Heritage Command NH 74863)
