Chapter Eighteen

A Night to Forget

Marko, Felix, Mrs. Fember, and Mrs. Fortis left the ghost house and made their way back outside to Mrs. Fember’s car without looking back. Marko tried to make eye contact with Lia, but she still seemed to be in shock.

Isabelle ran up to them with raised eyebrows. “What happened in there? We heard yelling and gunshots and one of the windows broke. Is everyone okay?”

“We’re alive, thankfully,” Mrs. Fember said, looking at Roxana. “Thanks for swooping in to save the day. You’re a true friend.”

Roxana wrapped an arm around her shoulder. “We’re in this fight together, Faith. Don’t you ever forget that.”

“So that was real magic?” Lia asked. “The lightning, the fire, the ice. I never thought I’d see something like that in my life.”

“As real as it gets,” Marko answered.

Mrs. Fember told Lia and Olivia, “I need you girls to keep this to yourselves. You too, Rusty. What happened today has to stay between us. Mortis is still out there and knows who you all are, so you could be in grave danger now.”

“But I already know about magic,” Olivia said.

“You do?” Mrs. Fember asked. “Why didn’t you use it back in the house?”

“That man... Mortis, right? He took my conduit. My mother’s bracelet.”

“My team will do recon of the house tonight and we’ll see if we can find it, okay?” Roxana promised, looking over at the shattered glass remains of the window Mortis jumped from to escape. “For the rest of you who are mortal, we need to sort things out before you go home. This is going to be a messy cleanup.”

“Sort... what out exactly?” Lia asked, concern in her voice. “Are we going to be prisoners to the magical government? Will there be some cover-up story on what really happened?”

“None of that. We just need to keep an eye on all of you until tomorrow morning, that’s all,” Mrs. Fember said calmly. “Even Olivia. Can’t risk you going home and telling everyone about what you saw today, or even worse – risk Mortis tracking you down and, to put it bluntly, murdering you. I have plenty of sleeping bags so you all can stay the night.”

They nodded, then got situated on the couch to pass time with a movie.

*******

As dusk rolled around and Roxana left to search the ghost house, Mrs. Fember set out three sleeping bags for Isabelle, Lia and Olivia in the living room. She decided Rusty would share the guest room with Felix. Then she made them all hot cocoa to get comfortable.

Marko eyed the mugs suspiciously, then pulled his mother aside and said, “You put something in their drinks, didn’t you?”

She nodded. “In all except Olivia’s since she’s one of us and I know will keep this to herself. That was the last of Rayne’s memory-erasing potion. All the years she spent tracking down the ingredients she needed, traveling the country, brewing up batches of it, and keeping you and the school unaware of magic, burned through her supply.
