Chapter Twelve

“It looks as though someone’s had an accident. Shouldn’t we stay?” he protests, looking around me back through the doors.

“Oh heavens, no. My aunts and cousin will look after it. Trust me.” I tug on his arms, dragging him from the building. “We really must go. Like, really must go.” I glance at the clock on the exterior wall. A half an hour to commandeer a carriage, get on our way, and solicit a proposal from him. Not exactly how I thought this would go down. “Oh, goodness! Where is a carriage when you need one?” I haul up my skirts, pacing the drive. There isn’t a one in sight. “Is there no driver anywhere?”

“What does it matter?” Sotherby asks.

“Because we need to go for a carriage ride right NOW!” I snap. “Rather, I’d really, really like to.” I calm down. “Is there some way we could arrange this?” I clutch my hands.

“I can take you, Miss,” says a nefarious looking gentleman who’s just pulled up to one side of the mansion in a rather rickety looking carriage drawn by a pair of old, tired-looking swayback steeds. As they amble forward into the light, I suddenly recognize the driver as Nettie. Why, of course! Don't tell me that Kit and Kat have ended up a couple of horses.

“Oh yes! If you wouldn’t mind!” I say and flood toward them.

“In this? You want to travel in this?” Sotherby says, gesturing.

“Oh come now, what does it matter what the carriage looks like as long as we go for a ride in it?” I throw open the door and help myself up onto the step. “Come now!” I say, whirling around and offering him a hand.

“Isn’t this a bit backward?” Sotherby protests, frowning.

“Does it matter how you get in? As long as we do?” I grab his hand and sling him up into the carriage, dumping him into the seat across from me. “How much time do we have?” I ask, looking up.

“Exactly nine minutes twenty-three seconds,” Nettie responds.

“Before what?” Sotherby asks.

“Never mind,” I smile as Nettie slaps the reins down on the old horses’ backs and we jolt into action, the carriage lunging abruptly forward, where I drop from a standing position inside it into the seat facing me, right into Sotherby’s arms.

“Now, wasn’t there something you wanted to say?” I sweep my hair back into place from my eyes then take up his hand into my own, lightly stroking the back of his knuckles.

“Yes. As a matter of fact, I do believe there was,” he says, his eyes shining.

“Well, go ahead, tell me!” I snuggle closer, seeing my aunts and cousin out the side carriage window, high up on the balcony, waving me off, and relax into Sotherby’s arms.

***

We trot on through the forest, through the dark, dark night, stars and moon lighting our way. And though it takes him the full two minutes fifty-one seconds, he finally says it. Sotherby pops the question. In the most special and tantalizing way.
