‘You hate me,’ said Fadil as we trudged through the woods. ‘That’s the only reason you’d make me come out here.’ He shuddered, wrapping his arms around himself. I couldn’t tell if he was doing it because he was in pain, he was cold, or was uncomfortable with where we were going. Probably all of the above.

‘He’s an alchemist. We know he’s about two hundred years old. That makes him the best person to advise us right now.’

‘Ben has a library full of books! He has a bookshop full of books now! There’s a library down the road! You have a Book of Shadows and a Book of the Dead. And they’re both a gazillion years old. And you’re telling me you can’t get what you need from any of those things?’

‘Not unless a book can magically make a warding potion, no.’

Fadil grunted. ‘He killed Thomas! How is it a good idea to ask a murderer for help?’

‘He didn’t kill Thomas. He just didn’t stop Goodfellow from killing him.’

Fadil rolled his eyes. ‘Semantics, Edie! The guy is a psychopath.’

‘If you have another suggestion for someone who can help us, by all means, let me know.’ I sure didn’t, and I wasn’t going to waste my time trying to find a better source when one was just down the road. We didn’t have time to waste.

‘The internet! What’s the point in the 21st century if you can’t use the internet!’ He huffed as he stamped through the freshly fallen leaves, his arms crossed over his massive coat. Even though it was hot and humid, he seemed to be unable to feel it. If he didn’t speak to Doc soon, I was going to reach out to him on Fadil’s behalf. It was definitely not massive-coat-wearing weather. I was sweating in jeans and a loose-fitting top.

‘How do we know anything we read on the internet is true? So much of it is made up. And if we order something, we have no idea how long it’ll take to show up or even if it’s legit.’

Fadil waved his arms in the air. ‘How do we know anything the alchemist says is true?’

‘Simple: he wants repeat business. If he lies to us he doesn’t get that. Also, he’s never technically lied. Just avoided the truth.’

Fadil still wasn’t impressed. ‘That does not make him a good person! Or someone we want to work with! Ever!’

Why was he making this harder than it needed to be? Tobias was a morally grey person, sure, but so far, when we’d needed him, he’d come through. What more did Fadil want?

‘We’re not in league with him. We’re going to see if he can help and then maybe pay him for his services. You’re really overthinking this.’

Fadil marched ahead, which seemed contradictory when he didn’t actually want to see Tobias. But, judging from his reaction, I was pretty sure he knew we didn’t have a choice but he was going to protest until we reached the front door anyway. He’d done the same thing last time.
