âYou hate me,â said Fadil as we trudged through the woods. âThatâs the only reason youâd make me come out here.â He shuddered, wrapping his arms around himself. I couldnât tell if he was doing it because he was in pain, he was cold, or was uncomfortable with where we were going. Probably all of the above.
âHeâs an alchemist. We know heâs about two hundred years old. That makes him the best person to advise us right now.â
âBen has a library full of books! He has a bookshop full of books now! Thereâs a library down the road! You have a Book of Shadows and a Book of the Dead. And theyâre both a gazillion years old. And youâre telling me you canât get what you need from any of those things?â
âNot unless a book can magically make a warding potion, no.â
Fadil grunted. âHe killed Thomas! How is it a good idea to ask a murderer for help?â
âHe didnât kill Thomas. He just didnât stop Goodfellow from killing him.â
Fadil rolled his eyes. âSemantics, Edie! The guy is a psychopath.â
âIf you have another suggestion for someone who can help us, by all means, let me know.â I sure didnât, and I wasnât going to waste my time trying to find a better source when one was just down the road. We didnât have time to waste.
âThe internet! Whatâs the point in the 21st century if you canât use the internet!â He huffed as he stamped through the freshly fallen leaves, his arms crossed over his massive coat. Even though it was hot and humid, he seemed to be unable to feel it. If he didnât speak to Doc soon, I was going to reach out to him on Fadilâs behalf. It was definitely not massive-coat-wearing weather. I was sweating in jeans and a loose-fitting top.
âHow do we know anything we read on the internet is true? So much of it is made up. And if we order something, we have no idea how long itâll take to show up or even if itâs legit.â
Fadil waved his arms in the air. âHow do we know anything the alchemist says is true?â
âSimple: he wants repeat business. If he lies to us he doesnât get that. Also, heâs never technically lied. Just avoided the truth.â
Fadil still wasnât impressed. âThat does not make him a good person! Or someone we want to work with! Ever!â
Why was he making this harder than it needed to be? Tobias was a morally grey person, sure, but so far, when weâd needed him, heâd come through. What more did Fadil want?
âWeâre not in league with him. Weâre going to see if he can help and then maybe pay him for his services. Youâre really overthinking this.â
Fadil marched ahead, which seemed contradictory when he didnât actually want to see Tobias. But, judging from his reaction, I was pretty sure he knew we didnât have a choice but he was going to protest until we reached the front door anyway. Heâd done the same thing last time.
