Phoenix

I reached for the scrub brush as I dumped way too much scouring powder into the tub. I didn’t even bother with gloves—even though in my mind I was cleaning up after having hacked apart Richard Sterling’s dead body. Geez, I wanted to kill him!

Mary was sitting up reading. She leaned forward to see what I was doing. “My, my, my. I’d say somebody got in your way,” she observed.

“It’s not funny. Not in the least.” I threw the brush at the rust stain below the spigot with enough force to chip the porcelain. I didn’t care.

“Hey, don’t take it out on me,” my sister admonished.

I closed my eyes, drew in a deep, cleansing breath, and got to my feet. Stepping into her room, I could see the look of concern on her face. My shoulders sagged. “I’m sorry, Beth. Just ignore me. I had a bad day.”

“It may have been just a bad day, but something tells me it was a very big day.”

I nodded. “You could say that.”

“Want to talk about it?”

That brought tears to my eyes. She was the only person in the world who would understand, and yet I couldn’t burden her with the details. It just wouldn’t be fair. Throwing back my shoulders, I kneeled onto the end of her bed and gave her a quick hug. “Nah. I’ve got it under control. No one gets me down for long.”

“No one. Well, that tells me what I needed to know. What did the chauvinistic slave-driver do this time? Another contract easter egg?”

“Huh,” I said, looking at her in amazement. “When did you get to be so intuitive?”

“Well, you might say I have time to work on it,” she countered. “Phee, you know I may be stuck here in the bed, but there are things I could do to help out. In fact, I’d enjoy having something to do.”

I opened my mouth to quickly put her at ease, but then stopped. Maybe I underestimated Mary. She was right. There were things she could do and any bit of extra money would certainly be appreciated. “What sort of things did you have in mind?”

“Oh, for one thing, I could do computer work, you know. I can type and I aced all those English classes. In fact, I’ve been looking around online and there are tons of jobs for people to work from home. I’d just need a bank account and a laptop. I’ve already got both of those.”

I looked at the aged MacBook with the cracked screen. Someone in her group had given it to her. I was pretty sure I could do better. “Is that something you really want to do, or are you just offering because I’m having a hissy fit?”

“Oh, Phee. You are famous for your hissy fits, my dear. They have yet to faze me. No, I think I’d enjoy having something practical to do. I know I rest a lot, and that’s to be expected. I’m thinking of applying for one of the editing projects, just as a beginning to see how it works out.
