Ex-Hex Training

Finn never knew what had changed Silver’s mind to make him decide to keep training him or why he’d confided in him his story, but he had a few ideas. Perhaps it was because Finn had returned to the swamp water or maybe it was because Silver had come to realize once more that Finn was his last chance of saving the world. Maybe he saw Finn as a sort of penance for all he’d done before becoming a Champion of Arbitration. Whatever the reason, here Finn was, training under the former Hex Hunter.

“Use Jigsaw’s teeth to your advantage,” instructed Silver, after having touched the Flourish Blade to Jigsaw. He’d done so slowly, as to bang together two Bizarre Blades would create a powerful blowback of magic. However, even though the Blades had been connected slowly and carefully, Finn could still feel the magical swords being pushed back by an invisible energy. “This is why you’re a horrible Champion, because you don’t think of these things. Even a child with a stick knows to use the twigs sprouting off of it to disarm. Use the teeth of your Blade to grab hold of mine and to pull me off balance.”

Finn pushed Jigsaw into the Flourish Blade before ripping it back. The teeth worked just as Silver had said they would, yanking Silver out of his stance as Finn yanked his sword.

“Good. Now, try it again, but faster. Disrupt my footing! Take me off-balance.”

Finn tried, but the blow of his attack exploded the two Blades apart. “Faster than that. You’ll have to take the magical recoil into consideration. More force, more speed, while simultaneously pulling back.”

Finn had to do this several times before he finally pulled the Flourish Blade—and Silver along with it. “Good, that’s exactly right. Do it again. Again. Again. Yes! That’s right!”

Finn performed this maneuver for a few hours, until his forearms finally started to show signs of fatigue. Silver’s training had been incredible—just a few months of heavy lifting had made Finn able to lift an extremely heavy object such as Jigsaw with such ease.

“Master, I have a question.”

“Make it quick. We have to move on, as by the end of the evening I want you to be able to not only break my stance but continue a cut even when blocked.”

“Can you hold Jigsaw?”

“You’re asking me if I can physically hold up Jigsaw? Yes, I suppose I could, but not for long. Jigsaw is an unnaturally heavy Bizarre Blade—one of the heaviest, I’d say. It is possible for it to be moved by others who are not bound to it but they will not be granted its help.”

“Help?” asked Finn. “What help?”

Silver snickered. “You honestly didn’t think that a puny person such as yourself could wield a Blade as massive as Jigsaw after just a few months of training in the woods, did you? No, that’s impossible. I’d bet my life that Jigsaw gives you the ability of strength. Just like a Blade can tamper
