Chapter Eleven
Mike had had a hell of a day. She hadn’t slept well the night before and Theresa had bugged the living shit out of her all day deciding it was time to do a full scale assault to try to find out all about Mike’s love life. It forced her to tell one lie after another till she wasn’t quite sure what the truth was anymore. To make matters worse business had been slow and her mother had called and she’d had to tell another huge lie just to keep from having to go to dinner at her parent’s house.
All of this caused her to have serious doubts about her relationship with Dana for the first time since they’d become lovers. Dana was pressuring her to move in with her, not a lot, but she asked her nearly every day if she had made any decisions. She was sure she loved Dana, but she wasn’t sure that was a good enough reason to upset everything else in her life. If she moved in with Dana how long was it going to be before Dana asked her to sell her business? If she did that she’d be completely dependent on Dana, and if she was living with Dana how long could she realistically stay in the closet?
How many more lies was she going to have to tell?
There was a lot of confusion and resentment fighting for dominance in her brain, so when Dana asked her for the umpteenth time to go to the studio with her for the day—something she would have loved to do—she was too tired and too upset to tell some lie about work or needing some rest.
“I’m afraid I’ll be photographed with you... you know? I’ll wind up on the cover of some trash magazine like Full Moon, and my mother will be in line at the supermarket and...”
“Nuf said,” Dana looked hurt, but didn’t say anything else.
“I’m not ashamed of you, Dana...”
“I know that.” Dana forced a smile. “I was just thinking about my own mother. I’m only now starting to pull everything together. Suddenly I can see that I might just figure things out. I would like to be able to tell my mother that I’ve finally found someone that I love who loves me back. I would like to be able to tell her, and have her be happy for me. But I can’t, because she wouldn’t. What’s worse is that now I’ve put you in the same possession with your parents.”
One minute Mike was completely commiserating with her lover, and the next she was boiling mad. They had their first fight.
“Oh too true, I was a completely straight woman until you enchanted me with your flaming charisma! I swear!” Mike was screaming before she knew it. “You’re absolutely right, you know. I never would have been queer if it wasn’t for you!”
“That’s not what I meant, Michelle...” Dana’s voice was calm... No, it was cold, almost removed… distant… not what she expected at all.
