Chapter Seventeen

The Mountain Gnome

The day was spent traveling out of the moor, which I think everyone had gotten tired of, especially after all of Håkan’s bedtime stories.

“Yeah, Håkan?” He looked at me. “Next time, let’s keep the scary stories to a minimum, okay?”

Håkan threw his head back and laughed. Inge and Olof grinned broadly beside him.

It was a sunny day, and our horses were just stepping off the moor, leaving the bracken and heath behind us.

Ahead, another thick forest loomed, and an icy path through the snow-covered hills.

Even the horses trotted a little faster than normal, eager to leave the mist and bog behind them.

“Tam, do you think we’ll get to the ice wizard soon?” Kym asked. Tam had been in charge of the crude map the duchesses had supplied us with, and pored over its markings often.

He put his head up, distracted. “I hope so, my friend,” he said with a grin.

Kym’s pony trotted out in front, and she was teaching it tricks.

“Taimim, prance!” said Kym, and the pony’s front legs began to arch and prance.

Kym laughed in delight.

“It is good to be back in the sun, isn’t it?” I said to Tupu, who rode next to me, Jim on her other side.

She looked at me, a smile on her face. “It sure is. It sure is.”
