I knocked on Soleil’s door with my good hand. Salty had come with me to the high priestess’s house as a portaler and guide goblin, and Rick as a guard. Sam and Chione agreed to hold down the fort and watch over Savvy, who still hadn’t come out of the spare room, despite us knocking regularly and leaving cups of tea outside the door.

“Asha,” said Soleil as she opened the door. “Thank the Void you’re here.”

“I—” I began. I needed to tell her what had happened, but she took my left hand and patted it. “You don’t have to say anything,” she said. “I’ve been having the most concerning visions about you, dear witchling. I know you need my help. I’m glad you came.”

I introduced Rick to Soleil as my bodyguard, and Salty as my travel agent, and she didn’t hesitate to invite us in, but only I accepted. Soleil took my hand and guided me down the hall. I imagined her black cloak flowing like smoky water behind us as we entered the yoga studio.

“Asha!” called a familiar voice. I heard footsteps coming over. “So good to see you.”

Sebastian barked in greeting, and then I knew it was Rose Devka. There were the voices of other witches too, which puzzled me.

“I didn’t mean to interrupt a meeting,” I said. It hadn’t been in my diary, as far as I knew.

There was a smile in Soleil’s voice. “You’re not interrupting,” she replied. “You’re the reason we’re all here.”

Devka sidled up to me and held my arm. “Soleil said you were in trouble so we called an emergency gathering.”

I felt that warm feeling again, being surrounded by people who cared about me. I may have been abandoned by my blood when I was a baby, but I was not alone. I may have given up on ever having a mother, but I had strong supportive women to buoy me in rough waters. I was already feeling less despair.

“Tell us what you need,” said Forsythia, voice quavering with worry.

“It’s ironic, really,” I began, but Boston cut me off.

“The Realm-famous cursebreaker needs a curse broken.” Her voice had snide inflection I didn’t appreciate. Sebastian barked again and came to my side. He was a good boy.

Soleil trotted toward us, gathering up her coven. She clapped her hands gently next to her cheek, as she was wont to do, like a Spanish dancer. “Come, my witches. Let us begin!”

I thought about the ever-expanding continent of purple and gray mottle on my skin; it made me feel ill. I firmly pushed any thought of Jax and her unborn baby out of my mind. Focus would trump empathy here, and time was of the essence.

I was guided toward the warmth of the burning candles in the center of the studio, forming a circle and holding hands. Ivy—the willowy hacker—and Forsythia announced their presence and stood on either side of me, squeezing my hands in turn as I took my place.

“Evoco et excito, nunc et semper, res ac mortales,” said Soleil, and I hear her whip her wand in front of her.
