BIERSTADT LAKE
This lake was named after Albert Bierstadt, the famous artist of the early 1900s whose dramatic paintings helped inspire the preservation of many of the natural wonders of the United States, including Rocky Mountain National Park. He visited this lake and was inspired by the stunning views it affords.
Although there are several ways to reach Bierstadt Lake, I recommend the steeper route because of the views and photo opportunities it provides. From the Bierstadt Lake parking area, the trail winds up twelve switchbacks, climbing about 600â in elevation with a total round-trip distance of 3.4 miles. Youâll need to be fairly fit to take this hike. Be sure to give yourself extra time, as the elevation gain will have you breathing hard.
As you head up the switchbacks, there are numerous viewpoints. Iâve listed two of them (B-1, B-2), but there are many others all along this climb. From these views, you can photograph the valley and the surrounding peaks. In the spring and autumn, these views are particularly dramatic with colorful aspen leaves.
After you crest the hill, follow the trail down into the forest and take a right turn at the first intersection. Follow the trail all the way around to its eastern end. After you pass the intersection for the Park & Ride, continue for an additional 0.3 miles until you reach an intersection on your left next to a horse tie-up. Follow this trail down to the waterâs edge.
All along this shoreline (B-3 ), you can capture dramatic views of the Continental Divide and, if the wind isnât blowing, you can get a beautiful reflection on the water. As you look for compositions, be mindful of the vegetation that grows along the shore area. Again, this view is best shot at sunrise through mid-morning.
