Chapter 19

Bullet or Blade

I stood at the hatch to the navigation bridge and peered inside. “Permission to come aboard?”

Captain Sprayberry turned from the console. “Absolutely. Come aboard, Chase.”

I stepped onto the bridge. “How’s your crew recall coming?”

“We’re at full strength and ready to cast off on your order.”

“Now that our Russian is aboard, we’re ready to go. What’s our time en route?”

“That’s up to you,” he said. “It’s nine hundred nautical miles. If we cruise at fifty knots, we’ll make the passage in eighteen hours. At that speed, though, we’ll burn a lot of fuel.”

“What’s our peak efficiency speed?”

“Seventeen to twenty-four knots.”

I ran the numbers in my head. “Plot a course and speed that will put us off the coast of Cabo after dark, day after tomorrow. We have a bunch of training to do and gear to set up.”

“You got it. Is there anything else?” he asked.

“Just for my peace of mind,” I said. “We are at full strength in defensive weaponry, right?”

He gave a satisfied smile. “Offensive and defensive weapons systems are all up and operational.”

“Thanks, Captain. I’m going to get back to my team. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

I found the team in a semicircle around Anya on the stern deck. Patti was still leaning against the rail and watching with devoted attention.

I slid beside her. “What are they doing?”

“So far, they’re just talking. Well, that’s not accurate . . . The woman, Anya, is talking, and the others are listening. You mentioned something about her having a skill set you needed on the team. What exactly can she do that you guys cannot?”

“It’s not a matter of can,” I said. “We have the skill. It’s a matter of what applying that skill would do to our heads. Anya’s trained and experienced in extremely brutal edged weapons application. There probably aren’t ten other people in the world who can do the things she’s capable of doing with a knife. Being able to do it physically is only half of the equation, though. Being able to live with yourself after slicing another human into bite-sized pieces is the other side of the coin.”

She furrowed her brow. “Oh, I hadn’t thought of that.”

“Anya was trained by the KGB before the wall came down. She’s fearless, brutal, and unstoppable.”

Patti sighed. “And beautiful.”

“Yes, but she was trained to use that as a weapon, too. It worked on me a dozen years ago.”

“Oh, really? Now that sounds like an interesting story.”

“That’s a story you’ll never hear.”

She looked up at me. “From the look in your eye, it’s a story that isn’t over.”

“You’re wrong about that. It’s most definitely over and done. If you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll join the class.”

I slipped behind my team, determined to avoid interrupting the class, but I should’ve known that couldn’t happen.

Anya said, “You are late, and there is punishment for this. Come to front.”

I stepped around my team and stood beside the teacher. She pulled an orange knife from her bag and tossed it toward me.
