Friday, February 9

It’s bittersweet.

Part of me is sad about being back home. I’m normally thrilled to be coming home after an assignment or even a vacation, but our vacation was cut short. I wasn’t ready to leave and I’m definitely not ready to be back here.

Being home means we’ll be getting back to work. We’ll be training every morning and who knows how long we’ll even be home before Michael Sinclair calls us out on assignment again. Now that we’re not training anymore, we’ll be on assignment more often.

The red and black Jeep are waiting for us at the airport when the plane lands early Friday morning.

I grab my duffle bag and reach for my large roller bag when Kal grabs the duffle from my shoulder.

“We’ve got your bags,” he tells me.

I don’t argue—if he wants to carry my bags, I will let him. I’m pretty tired after spending so much time on the plane, even if I was sleeping most of the flight.

I shuffle off of the plane, heading toward the red Jeep. Before I can get close, West opens the passenger side door for me, motioning me inside.

“Thanks,” I mumble, getting in.

He shuts the door for me and I look as he walks around the Jeep and gets in the driver’s seat. I notice that Kal, Ian, and Alek get into the other Jeep.

“Back to reality.” I buckle my seatbelt.

West doesn’t respond as he takes off. I glance over and him and see that his eyebrows are drawn together making him look angry.

Great—he’s in a bad mood again. Any pleasantry we had on vacation is long gone and now he’s back to hating me.

“I guess this is going to be a reoccurring theme in our lives.” I cross my arms over my chest, looking straight ahead as he pulls out onto the main road.

“What are you talking about?” West asks.

“You being mad at me for no reason all the time.” I pause. “Or ninety percent of the time. You’re not so bad the other ten percent.”

“I have to stay focused.” He grips the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles turning white.

I turn to look at him. “And you being focused means you have to be a jerk?”

Once again, he doesn’t respond.

So this is how it’s going to be. I was hoping I was wrong.

I cross my arms over my chest looking out the side window.

“Great,” I mumble.

“It has to be this way, Roxy,” West says.

I flinch when I hear him call me ‘Roxy.’ I’m not used to hearing my name on his lips, only the infuriating nickname ‘Princess.’ Though, it’s not so infuriating anymore. I’ve grown to like it.

Tears press against the back of my eyes. I want to blame my emotion on lack of sleep, but I’ve slept plenty.

I keep my head turned away from West so he can’t see my tears. The last thing I need is for him to know how much his words hurt me. He can hurt me like nobody else can.

“I’m sorry,” West says softly.
