Itâs bittersweet.
Part of me is sad about being back home. Iâm normally thrilled to be coming home after an assignment or even a vacation, but our vacation was cut short. I wasnât ready to leave and Iâm definitely not ready to be back here.
Being home means weâll be getting back to work. Weâll be training every morning and who knows how long weâll even be home before Michael Sinclair calls us out on assignment again. Now that weâre not training anymore, weâll be on assignment more often.
The red and black Jeep are waiting for us at the airport when the plane lands early Friday morning.
I grab my duffle bag and reach for my large roller bag when Kal grabs the duffle from my shoulder.
âWeâve got your bags,â he tells me.
I donât argueâif he wants to carry my bags, I will let him. Iâm pretty tired after spending so much time on the plane, even if I was sleeping most of the flight.
I shuffle off of the plane, heading toward the red Jeep. Before I can get close, West opens the passenger side door for me, motioning me inside.
âThanks,â I mumble, getting in.
He shuts the door for me and I look as he walks around the Jeep and gets in the driverâs seat. I notice that Kal, Ian, and Alek get into the other Jeep.
âBack to reality.â I buckle my seatbelt.
West doesnât respond as he takes off. I glance over and him and see that his eyebrows are drawn together making him look angry.
Greatâheâs in a bad mood again. Any pleasantry we had on vacation is long gone and now heâs back to hating me.
âI guess this is going to be a reoccurring theme in our lives.â I cross my arms over my chest, looking straight ahead as he pulls out onto the main road.
âWhat are you talking about?â West asks.
âYou being mad at me for no reason all the time.â I pause. âOr ninety percent of the time. Youâre not so bad the other ten percent.â
âI have to stay focused.â He grips the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles turning white.
I turn to look at him. âAnd you being focused means you have to be a jerk?â
Once again, he doesnât respond.
So this is how itâs going to be. I was hoping I was wrong.
I cross my arms over my chest looking out the side window.
âGreat,â I mumble.
âIt has to be this way, Roxy,â West says.
I flinch when I hear him call me âRoxy.â Iâm not used to hearing my name on his lips, only the infuriating nickname âPrincess.â Though, itâs not so infuriating anymore. Iâve grown to like it.
Tears press against the back of my eyes. I want to blame my emotion on lack of sleep, but Iâve slept plenty.
I keep my head turned away from West so he canât see my tears. The last thing I need is for him to know how much his words hurt me. He can hurt me like nobody else can.
âIâm sorry,â West says softly.
