SARATAN

We’re outnumbered, the guards eyeing us as if we’re the traitorous bastards who let all of Seawall struggle; when in reality, we’re the ones trying to save it.

That is, if we can save ourselves first.

“Prince Nadir,” one of them calls, “turn yourself and the others who have joined you over to the king. You’ve been guaranteed safe haven if you do so.”

Ajmi snorts under his breath, but thankfully, stays quiet. I’m unsure of what they would do if one of us crossed them, and I’m not planning on finding out. Before I can come up with a plan, Nadir does something surprising—even to me.

“No!” he shouts, standing straight and regal.

In this moment, there is no question as to who he was born to be. The guards all hesitate at his command.

“No?” the original one challenges.

The silence grows thick with tension, and I ready myself. Glancing around discreetly, I try to locate a weak spot in the guards.

I must get the prince and Zia to safety.

I see that Illium and Zia are catching more attention from the under guards and know we need to move immediately. I home in where the guards and not in formation.

“Left,” I whisper, trying my best to not move my lips.

Ajmi glances at me from out of the corner of his eyes in question—that is, until he looks where I instructed and recognizes the danger quickly coming towards Zia.

Toward all of us.

“On three,” Ajmi murmurs back.

Nadir and I both give an imperceptible nod, and he starts to count down. When the thief reaches three, we move. I yank my sword from its sheath at the same time Nadir pulls out his, and Ajmi somehow materializes a knife.

“Have you had that this whole time?!” I snap, splitting my focus between the two guards who rush us.

“Do you really think I would have nothing? You and your men need to learn how to do better searches!” Ajmi counters, grunting as he punches his own opponent in the face.

“No!” I hear Zia shriek, and the noise fuels me on.

There is no way we can let her get hurt. I know the others hear her, too, and we all fight harder because of it. The sounds of clanging metal and pained grunts fill the garden. Ajmi, Nadir, and I fight our way over to get to where Illium and Zia are battling their own attackers.

Yet, the more we fight, the more guards appear.

Where were these men when I was leading the guard?!

“Zia!” Ajmi shouts, the panicked tone startling me.

Adrenaline pumps faster through my body at the word. Punching out, I clip the man in front of me in the jaw, knocking him unconscious. As soon as he’s down, I run toward where Zia and Illium are, Nadir and Ajmi not far behind me. Illium kicks out, hitting one of the guards in the gut, before kneeing him in the nose as he keeps Zia shielded behind him.

Almost to them, I think to myself, ensuring the prince and the thief are following suit when four more guards pour in from the hedge where they were hiding.
