Chapter 32

We went back to Carlie’s house and were greeted by her mother, who was in the kitchen prepping meals for the upcoming week. Bright bell peppers and shredded chicken sat on cutting boards and strainers held recently cleaned strawberries and blueberries.

“Hey! We’re going downtown later to take pictures and eat. Madie’s here!” Carlie grinned and rubbed my arm with her thumb.

Her parents greeted me and gave me a hug before turning to and hugging the rest of the girls when we came piling in.

“Welcome back, Madie! And of course, that’s okay, sweets. Let me know if you guys need anything,” her mom squealed.

But we weren’t going to just take pictures downtown. Carlie planned to go to Breezes, the infamous rooftop bar for the college kids in the area. Just so happened, Vanessa used to date one of those college kids who works there. Luckily, they’re still friends, so she normally gets plus ones, but tonight we had to sneak in. Our fake IDs would work but not to get us in for free.

We went into Carlie’s room, which I considered my dream room. She had every plant imaginable, hanging, sitting, pinned against every wall of her room. She started collecting plants when she was fourteen and every year on special holidays or her birthday she received another one. Most of them had some sort of meaning behind them, but some were just for decoration. This is what made her. She always called it her sanctuary and greatest accomplishment. I could always breathe better in here too.

Carlie turned on her bathroom vanity lights and opened her French doors that led into her oasis backyard.

“Carlie, I will say this until the day I die, but I am obsessed with your room,” Naomi said.

“We love you too, Naomi,” Carlie chimed.

We all pulled out our bags and Carlie turned on her TV to the music app. She picked our playlist we all made before I left. Music played and she put the remote down.

“All right, so, the place opens up at eight and it is currently four, do we want to get ready, chill out and then take sunset pictures on the parking deck downtown before Breezes?” she asked while grabbing her hair straightener from her side table.

“Oh yes! I love taking sunset pictures!” Blair said happily with a beauty blender in hand.

“So, I should do pink eyeliner?” Naomi asked.

“Duh. That shouldn’t even be a question, Na,” I followed.

My phone buzzed twice, distracting my gaze from looking through my makeup bag. I picked it up and saw a Snapchat from Nate. My heart stopped for the second time that day.

“I’m not even going to think about what to wear until I’m done with hair and makeup,” Carlie said, and I tapped her arm.

“Nate texted me,” I whispered.

Her eyes grew wide. “Like text or Snapchat?” she asked.

“Snap. What the fuck do I do?”

“What happened?” Naomi called out at us.

We both turn.

“Nate just Snapchatted me,” I said.

“What?”

“Oh, Jesus Christ.”

“You are lying.”

I turned my phone to them, and we crowded on the bed.
