Fletcher wanted his ships ready for whatever action ensued, and so commenced fueling from oilers such as the USS Neosho as soon as the rendezvous occurred. The Rear Admiral desired full bunkers so that in the event of protracted maneuvering, lack of fuel would not force an American withdrawal or even leave one of his ships dead in the water. At this point, he expected refueling to conclude on May 5th, at which point his entire combined armada could move out in search of the foe. Ultimately, events did not cooperate with this leisurely schedule.
