Chapter Eleven
Somewhere in the Ozark National Forest, Arkansas
Since his attempt to escape, Dustin had been tied up whenever the Howler was asleep or whenever it left to go hunting. He was fascinated at the dexterity and know-how of the creature in so many areas, but wondered why they couldnât communicate. If itâs that intelligent, then it ought to be able to talk.
Other than hitting him pretty hard in order to restrain him, Billy didnât seem to want to hurt him, and he didnât feel like it intended to kill him. All in all, he had to consider the behavior of the Howler to be hospitable. It shared its meat and water and allowed him to move around freely, though it became a little more aggressive whenever he moved toward the cave opening.
Still feeling the effects of the heavy blow it had given him at the cave entrance, Dustin decided to just sit back and observe the creature. In addition to the cobwebs, his right shoulder was hurting and the fingers on his right hand tingled. Even when he wasnât tied up, he could barely lift his arm. It wouldnât be much of a fight if he could only use one arm. His best bet for now was to focus on working out some form of communication.
Since the creature had left almost an hour before, the light in the cave was growing dim as the fire died out. That was the part he hated most about being tied up and left alone. The long hours that passed inside the cave were the worst part of it all. The lack of sunlight was making things even worse. He thought about a story heâd heard years ago about two Montana cowboys going crazy in a line shack that had been drifted over with snow trapping them inside.
After being trapped for a couple of weeks, theyâd gone crazy and attacked each other. When the snow had cleared enough to open the only window on the cabin, only one of the two came out alive. The other was half eaten. The survivor, after being able to tell his tale, climbed inside of a bottle for years afterward. Full of remorse, he eventually bit down on the barrel of a shotgun and made his final escape of the horror heâd endured.
They said they had gone crazy for lack of sunlight. Would he go crazy like that since he wasnât getting any sunlight? How long could he hold out before he made another attempt to escape?
So far, what the Howler had brought in was deer. It didnât seem to have any interest in bringing in other people. Did he have some sort of target on him because of his encounter with the yetis? Had they spread the word about in him some way? Was he just always in the wrong place at the wrong time? Three times were too many for it to be coincidence.
Ben and Lux were Sasquatch hunters. Their run-ins had all been intentional, but the only yeti heâd ever hunted was the one on Everest.
