MEDEA

The background to this play is formed by the heroic exploits of Jason in bringing back the Golden Fleece to Greece from the barbarian land of Colchis. He was only able to do this with the aid of Medea, who put her magical powers at his service and thus enabled him to complete the tasks required of him by her father, Aeetes, the king of Colchis. Jason yoked the team of fire-breathing oxen, sowed the field with dragon’s teeth, and finally, again with her aid, lulled to sleep the dragon that guarded the Fleece. Jason and Medea made their escape, but to deflect the pursuit by the Colchians, Medea murdered her brother Apsyrtus. The play opens years later, after Jason and Medea have been married in Greece and had children. Jason is now planning to divorce Medea and marry a new wife in Corinth.
