Solution

In 1977, there were transponders in the airplanes and beacon equipment in the air traffic control facilities. This was a tremendous advancement. On the controller’s display, he still had a primary radar return. The controller could adjust, and like in 1960, he could see a target. He also had a double slash over the target. He could just use one slash only. This was called secondary radar. When an airplane unknown to the controller would make an initial call, he only knew its position based on the information the pilot would give. For positive identification, the controller asked the pilot to “squawk ID.” The pilot would push the button, and the two slashes filled in like a box. The controller now had positive identification. Previously in this situation in the past, the controller had to issue a new heading to fly and then look for an aircraft that was responding and turning to the heading issued. The controller could turn off the primary radar. This left the secondary radar only. The controller wouldn’t need the CP because the radar was turned off, and the precipitation wouldn’t show anyway.
