Carla stopped at Bookshop Santa Cruz that night and picked up The Lover, taking it to bed with her. When Jean-Claude glimpsed the cover, he said, surprised, “Ah. I see you’ve picked up something worth spending time on. Good.”

Carla did not reply, but she felt a bit of pride as Jean-Claude turned on his own bedside lamp to read his book.

When Carla finally drifted off to sleep, the conversation with Lucien Toussaint and the first chapters in The Lover all combined to create sensuous dreams and Carla woke up at one point, uncomfortable from the sogginess of her panties. Jean-Claude’s side of the bed was empty. Carla sat up, glancing in the direction of the bathroom, but it was dark. Wiggling out of her underwear, she left them somewhere in the blankets and slid out of bed, wandering downstairs where light shone from the living room. The smell of Jean-Claude’s cigarette greeted her, setting off something primal inside of Carla as thoughts of Lucien smoking and his smile flashing flirtatiously at her swam through her mind. Jean-Claude was standing before the darkened window, staring out.

“Can’t sleep?” Carla asked.

He spun around, startled and something else. Worried? Probably the business.

“One of those nights,” he said.

“Make love to me,” Carla said.

Jean-Claude stared at her as if he hadn’t heard right. She pulled her gown up over her head and before she’d completely taken it off, he strode in three steps across the room, his arm around her naked frame, a moan escaping him as Carla helped him off with his pants. He turned to put his cigarette out in the ashtray and in seconds he was in her and they lay writhing on the floor, twisted in their clothes.
