THE DRIVE BACK into Boston seemed longer than usual for Sarah. The silence between the two women added to the length of the trip. Their limited conversation was subdued and uncomfortable. Pauline had been so easy to talk to just the evening before, but now Sarah was embarrassed by the disaster that had almost happened in the guest bedroom. She knew it would have been even worse if Pauline had taken her to bed. Everything would have been even more awkward between them the following morning as they packed to return to the city. What could either of them have said to assuage the other's guilt? It had to have been the wine, Sarah thought. She never drank much because it always lowered her inhibitions to the point of recklessness. Kelley had kidded her about her low tolerance for alcohol before, but assured her she was unbelievably adorable when she was a little tipsy.

Sarah leaned her elbow on the window frame of the Murano and ran her fingers absently through her hair. She looked across the car seat at Pauline. She was resting her head against the headrest, and Sarah couldn't tell if she was asleep or not. Her sunglasses hid her eyes and her chest rose and fell in a regular, steady breathing pattern. Perhaps Pauline hadn't been able to sleep the night before either.
