CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
As I place my phone on the desk, a chill settles over me and my heart feels like itâs about to crash out of my body.
For a third time, Sean Kelly has threatened me and heâs made it clear yet again that he will hurt me if I donât do as he says. The involvement of the police appears not to have impacted on his behaviour. Heâs still prepared to act like a raving psychopath to ensure that he doesnât lose control of his wife. He fears that if she develops a mind of her own, sheâll leave him, and heâs making it known that heâll do whatever it takes to stop that happening. I hate to think what heâs doing to Alice behind closed doors.
For a few minutes, my thoughts swim in feverish circles as I try to decide whether or not to call the police again. Is there any point? Would they be able to do anything? Once again, it would be his word against mine and itâs unlikely that Alice will take my side. The cops might even tell me that it was unwise to have taken her call since Iâd been advised not to have any contact with her.
It doesnât help that I keep hearing Seanâs voice in my head and it makes it hard for me to refocus. But eventually I decide that I shouldnât rush into calling the police. That if I do so it would be like pouring petrol onto a raging fire.
âYou look as though youâre lost within yourself,â Ryan says, breaking into my thoughts.
I stretch my face into a smile for his benefit. âJust thinking about how and where to kick things off tomorrow, boss,â I lie.
He smiles back at me. âWell, why donât you leave that until the morning? I came over to tell you that Iâm knocking off, so you ought to as well. Itâs been a long shift for all of us and since youâre coming in tomorrow, you should leave now and have a relaxing evening.â
Thereâs no denying I feel really tired, so Iâm more than happy to take his advice and knock off. I shove the notes Iâve made into my bag and put on my coat. When I glance at my watch, Iâm surprised to see that itâs 6 p.m. already. Later than I thought.
Martin is also calling it a day, so we go down in the lift together.
âI couldnât help noticing that you didnât seem to be enjoying the conversation you were having on the phone earlier,â he says. âWould I be right in thinking that you were talking to one of the two blokes you told me about over lunch? Your friendâs disagreeable husband or the guy you dumped yesterday?â
My eyebrows slide upwards. âWas it that bloody obvious?â
The ghost of a smile touches his lips. âNot to anyone else in the room.â
I take a deep breath and blow out through puckered lips. âAs a matter of fact, it was Sean. He tried to do his best again to scare me.
