CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

As I place my phone on the desk, a chill settles over me and my heart feels like it’s about to crash out of my body.

For a third time, Sean Kelly has threatened me and he’s made it clear yet again that he will hurt me if I don’t do as he says. The involvement of the police appears not to have impacted on his behaviour. He’s still prepared to act like a raving psychopath to ensure that he doesn’t lose control of his wife. He fears that if she develops a mind of her own, she’ll leave him, and he’s making it known that he’ll do whatever it takes to stop that happening. I hate to think what he’s doing to Alice behind closed doors.

For a few minutes, my thoughts swim in feverish circles as I try to decide whether or not to call the police again. Is there any point? Would they be able to do anything? Once again, it would be his word against mine and it’s unlikely that Alice will take my side. The cops might even tell me that it was unwise to have taken her call since I’d been advised not to have any contact with her.

It doesn’t help that I keep hearing Sean’s voice in my head and it makes it hard for me to refocus. But eventually I decide that I shouldn’t rush into calling the police. That if I do so it would be like pouring petrol onto a raging fire.

‘You look as though you’re lost within yourself,’ Ryan says, breaking into my thoughts.

I stretch my face into a smile for his benefit. ‘Just thinking about how and where to kick things off tomorrow, boss,’ I lie.

He smiles back at me. ‘Well, why don’t you leave that until the morning? I came over to tell you that I’m knocking off, so you ought to as well. It’s been a long shift for all of us and since you’re coming in tomorrow, you should leave now and have a relaxing evening.’

There’s no denying I feel really tired, so I’m more than happy to take his advice and knock off. I shove the notes I’ve made into my bag and put on my coat. When I glance at my watch, I’m surprised to see that it’s 6 p.m. already. Later than I thought.

Martin is also calling it a day, so we go down in the lift together.

‘I couldn’t help noticing that you didn’t seem to be enjoying the conversation you were having on the phone earlier,’ he says. ‘Would I be right in thinking that you were talking to one of the two blokes you told me about over lunch? Your friend’s disagreeable husband or the guy you dumped yesterday?’

My eyebrows slide upwards. ‘Was it that bloody obvious?’

The ghost of a smile touches his lips. ‘Not to anyone else in the room.’

I take a deep breath and blow out through puckered lips. ‘As a matter of fact, it was Sean. He tried to do his best again to scare me.
