Money Replaces Air

In The Recruiting Officer, Kite’s and Plume’s money supplants air as the ligature of society. When Silvia’s older brother Owen dies, Ballance reconsiders her likely marriage to Plume and, in the process, illuminates the ways in which economic systems rather than environmental processes shape the characters and their worlds. Ballance idealizes a society premised on landed estates and disparages expropriation; he attacks Plume, whom he likens to the nouveau riche, a class that spends as quickly as it acquires wealth:

Twelve hundred Pound a Year wou’d ruine him, quite turn his Brain. Captain of Foot worth twelve hundred Pound a Year! ’Tis a Prodigy in Nature: Besides this, I have five or six thousand in Woods upon my Estate; Oh! That wou’d make him stark mad, for you must know that all Captains have a mighty Aversion to Timber, they can’t endure to see Trees standing; then I shou’d have some Rogue of a Builder by the help of his damn’d Magick Art transform my noble Oaks and Elms into Cornishes, Portals, Sashes, Birds, Beasts, Gods and Devils, to adorn some magotty, new-fashion’d Bauble upon the Thames.
