Nestled in a valley just past a ski hill, Little Brook was a simple rural village. Two arterial roads passed by, creating a t-intersection at the northeast corner. It was close enough to larger centres that no one would come to it for services, but far enough removed to be isolated. The houses clustered around the old white wooden church, whose steeple rose above the other buildings, marking the location.
They pulled into the village. Apart from the church, the only other public building was an old gas station. No gas pumps remained, and the bays now held an antique shop, with the rest of the station housing a small convenience store. They parked their car in front of one of the bay doors.
Their immediate impression was of a boring place to live. Nothing to show anything might be amiss.
"Hello. Can I help you?" came a friendly voice. An older woman was getting up off her knees from where she had been tending her lush flower garden. A wide smile beamed on her face. "Roy only opens the antique shop on appointment during the week. If he knew you were coming, he'd have opened up for you. I can see if he's around?"
"No, thank you, ma'am. We're not here for the antique shop. My name is Joe, and he's Pete."
"We're location scouts."
"Location scouts? For what," she asked.
"For a movie. I can't say which. The producers keep these things secret, you understand," said Pete.
"A movie? In our little village? How exciting. I'm Laura," she said, pulling off her glove and extending a hand. "Nice to meet the two of you. Not sure what you're looking for, for your movie. But head over to the church. Dale would be the best to help you out; he runs our little coffee shop. I'll take you over and introduce you."
"That's very kind of you."
"The church brought us here. We heard Little Brook had the style of church we needed for a few of the shots," said Pete. "That and a few shots of period homes; exteriors only. We'd only be in town for a few days."
"Any big stars?"
"A few are attached to the picture. We'd shoot a pivotal scene here, so the stars will be on set. Can't tell you who."
"I understand. Wow, I hope we're everything you want. Everyone will be so excited." Laura led them up to the stairs of the church and held open the door for them. "Dale," she called. "These movie scouts want to film a movie here in town!"
Laura led them into the community centre. The interior no longer resembled a church. The pews were long removed, with a few remaining along the side walls to offer seating. Where the altar had been a counter now stood, complete with a large silver espresso machine. A few small tables and chairs clustered near the bar. In the central open area, a woman was leading a group of older men and women in a yoga class, and off to one side, two women sat at easels, painting a still-life of a bouquet.
