“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the lord! And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (JOSHUA 24:11–15)

After Joshua’s reminder of the Lord’s faithfulness to his people, the Israelites renew the covenant made by Moses. But here Prudentius uses these tribes to suggest the victory of the forces of evil. As Taddei notes, Prudentius’s deployment of the scriptural passage is remarkable “inasmuch as it transforms a commonly accepted sign of the Lord’s fidelity to the covenant and of the deliverence of His people into a representation of the universal and continuing power of the external forces of evil.” (Taddei 1981, 178, my emphasis). Unsettlingly, Scripture itself proves as difficult to interpret and as flexible as the deceptively adorned face of the made-up woman or the fluid body of the pantomime dancer.
