Alina was exhausted. They’d landed in Oslo and Zak had bundled her into a sleek SUV. She’d been too tired to protest or even question what was happening. She knew he’d look after her, make sure Art was safe, and for now, that was enough.

Zak drove while Fox followed in a second vehicle. Their journey tracked endless ribbons of dark road. He’d said he lived in the countryside. But this? Trees and rock speared toward the sky on all sides, making her feel small.

She rested her head against the glass, still struggling to comprehend what had happened. When she opened them again, expecting it to only have been half an hour, the drive was over and Zak was parking under the overhang of an oak clad building that grew organically from the mountainside.

He came around to the passenger side and helped her from the car. “We’re here.”

Gravel crunched her feet as he led her up the stairs. Behind her, Fox waved through his open window and turned his vehicle, heading home.

She lifted a hand in goodbye as Zak unlocked the front door and walked her into a large living space.

Zak’s living space.

He placed her bags at the foot of a set of stairs that she presumed led to bedrooms.

On her left, two state-of-the-art Mac computers dominated the space. In contrast, on her right, several easy chairs huddled around a wood burning stove. The chairs were beaten, comfy looking, but that was not what caught her attention.

Zak tracked her gaze and cleared his throat. “Um…”

“You like to read?”

A self-conscious shrug and that sexy crooked smile again. Tension locked in her muscles thawed a little under its influence. She’d been worried she should have stayed in Nuuk with Art, Eli and the others. The police had been informed and would speak to them in the morning. She should be there.

And yet she wanted to be here.

With Zak.

He slotted his hand into hers as if it was the most natural thing. “Come with me.”

She climbed the stairs with him, passing through a landing dominated by a soaring window. Right now it was dark, but a sprinkling of lights sparkled on the far side of the fjord. Shelves bordered the window, and its cushioned lined seat, also crammed with books. She glimpsed titles as Zak led her higher. The Heartbeat of Trees. The Brilliant Abyss. Nature and Ecology.

Her heart did a funny dance. Perhaps she and Zak had more in common than she’d dared to hope. More than the electricity that spun through her when she was in the same room as him? Did she need more than that?

They reached the upper floor. There was only one door. One bedroom?

“This is the bedroom.” He flicked a switch. Lamps on either side of a king sized bed and linen the color of winter ocean gave a gentle glow to the room. The
