OUTSIDE, THE city pulsed with life. Its lights glittered all around them as they walked. Jesse glanced over and smiled at him. A rush of anticipation made Aaron feel as if he could float over Manhattan right now. He leaned his body closer to Jesse’s as they stopped at a street corner and waited for a light to change while cars and taxis zoomed past them.

“Where exactly are we heading?” Jesse asked. His eyes were wide and questioning.

Aaron smiled. “I hadn’t thought about it yet. We can’t really go to my place since I’m currently living with my mom and grandma.”

“We could drive back to the cabin?”

“We could.” Aaron gave him a rueful, lopsided grin. “But I’m not sure I can wait that long.” As Jesse flushed, he added, “Without that beard, you realize, I can see your cheeks every time you blush.”

“It’s not really that attractive.” Jesse winced slightly, covering his scar with his hand.

Aaron exhaled slowly, thinking before he spoke, sensing that he needed to get this right. The scar was more visible, the skin puckered and angry-looking as it went from Jesse’s cheek down toward his chin.

When I fell, she followed me down, her big gawky paws stumbling as she maneuvered the ravine, but she did it. She came over and licked me, but it had been a tough fall. I’d landed face first on some jagged rocks.”

“God! You must have been all cut up!”

“Yeah, it was pretty nasty. I was lucky not to lose my eye. The rocks sliced my cheek open to the bone, and there was a lot of bleeding. I used my shirt to put pressure on it, but blood soaked through. My mind went blank right about then. I think that I lay there for some time. But Dolly had kept on poking me with her cold nose and urging me up. Somehow, I managed to slowly climb out. I have no idea how long it took Dolly and me to get back to the cabin and call for help. I was very woozy. It really was a miracle I made it back.”

“You must have been so frightened out there all alone.”

“Mostly I was angry with myself for being so ill equipped on the trail. That’s why now I always hike with a pack, stocked with first aid supplies and water, and even a cell phone, although reception on the mountain, as you know, is spotty at best. God knows, I was relieved to see my cabin and get to the house phone.”

“What happened?”

“The ambulance came, and at the ER, I needed five staples in the side of
